Starter issues again

I installed powermaster gear reduction starter about a year ago and all has been fine until it started just giving a click from the solenoid sometimes when turning the key and firing up without issue other times.It will start with 2 or 3 tries sometimes and others just solenoid clicks and wont start for 20 minutes or so .I thought it was heat related but has done it a couple of times from stone cold in the morning and started fine from with the motor well and truly hot.
I have ordered a heat shield for the starter but it does not act like a heat problem.Any other suggestions?

have you checked battery voltage while cranking or a cranking load test?

could be voltage drop in cabling or loose connections on either positive or ground..

battery age? type? load tested battery?

regular wet cells around here make it about 5 years then drastically decline performance..


the above remote solenoid and consequent 'one wire' gm starter solenoid conversion are clever for certain applications but not likely going to remedy your no crank symptoms.. although the remote solenoid relocates the live B+ to a safer location, the original onboard starter solenoid is still fully functioning, only switched differently..

Every thing else checks out fine ….battery fully charged and near new all connections good and ground checked.
Maybe because I did not heat wrap my starter I have a heat damaged solenoid?
I have had this issue with my old oem starter but that was just worn out .Will install a remote solenoid and see how that goes.

If the connections are tight, possible suspects include bad solenoid or worn starter brushes.

like I said before, the addition of a remote solenoid and converting the existing to a one-wire operation is not going to resolve your issue..

all of the existing components are still required to operate normally along with the additional remote solenoid..

either way, smart move here would still be to troubleshoot and diag your problem before changing anything..

as mentioned above, if all of your cabling connections are clean and tight, the starter may be bad from heat exposure..

unfortunately new and expensive does not always equal quality anymore..

have you done the voltage drop and load tests I mentioned? they will likely reveal the cause and lead you to a conclusion..

New is likely Chinese floor sweepings. Higher price means higher profit margin for the outfit selling them not higher quality.
If you still have your old Delco starter you can get it rebuilt by a reputable shop and move on.
