How would I adjust my kickdown cable?

My kickdown/detent cable has an adjuster on the firewall side of the cable bracket on the intake. Just pop up the retainer with a flat blade screwdriver, move the cable forward or backward and push the retainer down to lock in place. The shaft going through the bracket should have ribs on it that allow the retainer clip to lock into place.

What trans?

TH350 is totally different setup to say a 700R4....

TH350 is a detent action cable only...it does not provide throttle input to the pressures in the trans....to adjust....push the lock tab on the back of the cable bracket and push inner towards front of truck....push throttle fully open then pull detent cable backwards until the slack is removed....

700R4....The TV cable on the 700R4 and 200-4R transmissions controls line pressure, shift points, shift feel, part throttle downshifts, and detent (full throttle) downshifts. So if the TV cable is not adjusted properly, it can cause numerous transmission problems.

ADJUSTMENTS


Before adjusting the TV cable, check the following:
1. Transmission oil level. Correct if necessary.
2. Proper engine operation. This can cause problems similar to a malfunctioning transmission.
3. Dragging brakes. This can cause detract from vehicle performance and cause transmission malfunction.
4. Check the TV cable to insure that it is the right part for the vehicle.
5. Check the cable to insure that it is properly connected at the transmission.

Adjustment procedure (self-adjusting cable)

1. Stop the engine.
2. Depress the adjusting tab and move the slider back through the fitting away from the carburetor until it stops.
3. Release the adjustment tab.
4. Move the throttle linkage to rest against the full throttle stop, then release it .
5. Check the cable to insure that it is not sticking or binding.
6. Road test the vehicle.

Good instructions. Just wanted ask when to check trans level on the stick (700R4). Hot or cold? level changes based on temp right?

Hot, on level ground. That's pretty much the case for all automatic transmissions.

Make sure you dont overfill it !

Too much can foam it up and cause strange driving issues....

The picture posted looks like a cable for a TH350 not a 7r400.

Agreed, it does look like a TH350 cable end...

Thats part of the reason why I provided both adjustment scenarios, with the warning about 700R4 adjustment issues....

Are your instructions for the detent on a turbo 350 for the newer style adjuster or the older style, Aussie?

The new and old style work in similar ways....regardless of the style of the bracket mount...

Biggest issue is having the detent cable act as a limiter for wide open throttle...I have seen these cable literally snap the end off if setup too short....

I suspect this is a TH350 in this post...the 700R4 cables dont have that travel slot in the end of the cable....
