Arrow Dana 44 wanted...

Hey guys.

I want to convert my '61 4x4 over to disc brakes, but I need an open knuckle front axle to do so. So...if anyone has one (preferably in the DFW area), let me know.

Thanks,
Matt

Matt,
you should say if you are looking for 6 lug or 8 lug. too bad you aren't in calif., i have 3 disc front dana 44s in 8 lug. one is a 4.56, one a 4.10 and the other i haven't checked yet. our pick-n-pull yards are full of them in 6 lug form too.

Duke, There should be a tag bolted to the cover with the ratio on it.

Arrow

I'm not 100% sure about gearing in the front...not positive on what the gears are in the stocker thats currently in the truck.

However, my dad recently discovered quite a bit of slack in the pinion gears in the rear end, so now I'm looking to replace both axles.

1) to be able to convert to 4 wheel discs...which will make stopping that beast alot easier..

2) to be able to eliminate expensive pinion gear replacements.

so if anyone can help, let me know.

so now that you are thinking of changing both axles, what gear ratio do you want? Half ton trucks commonly had 3.07, 3.73, 4.10, or 4.56 gears. You probably have 4.10's or 4.56's if the stock engine was a 6 cylinder. 3.42 and 3.54 gear ratios are also available in newer models. You should be able to pull any dana 44 axle from 1971 and up until the 10 bolt became the GM front axle of choice. With a little work any 12 bolt rear axle will work when you change that one out.
