Truck won't shift!
When the truck is running I can't get the gears to shift when the clutch is in. I'm running a saginaw 3 speed. When the truck was running and the driveshaft was off..the out put shaft would spin while the clutch was in. any ideas WTF is up before this thing goes up in flames?

make sure the fork is seated correctly in the throw out bearing. is it a new clutch?

Yeah new clutch, disc, pressure plate, throw out bearing.

check the fork first then check and watch to make sure the clutch rod is actually moving the fork through its range of motion

some told me once with a new clutch and all that you should put it in gear with the truck off push the clutch in and start it. hold the brake and it should just kinda work.... i had to do that in my old 67 and it worked.

I agree , check the fork & range of motion on the linkage. Also there were 2 different style clutch covers (flat diaphragm, & a raised diaphragm) . these both took a different lenght throwout bearing. if you have a 3 finger setup that was a different lenght yet. i have been in the spot , where the parts were not matched & saw the problem you are having. if you pull the insp plate off the bottom of the bell, you should have approx 3/8 - 1/2" clearance tween the fingers on the cover, & the throwout bearing with the clutch all the way up. if you have an inch or better, the parts guy has mismatched your pcs. best of luck,crazyL

The clutch assembly was sold as a kit , so I hope it's all the right parts. After it wouldn't shift properly and I couldn't get the engine to idle properly I said " FK IT!!" we pushed the truck back outside and went home. So I will ahve to try and adjust it some more. I have close to 2" of free play at the top of the pedal before I gets any kind of tension. Is 2" to much?

Dubie, mine is not a new clutch, but I was told that periodically the disc will stick to the flywheel, especially when they sit alot. I had to start mine in gear, clutch in (driveline hooked up) and drive then hit brakes. After a few trys my disc upstuck and I had proper clutch agin. I had the same pedal indication you describe. Felt like almost nothing to the floor. Again, I don't know if this would apply since you have a new clutch.

Are you sure that the clutch disc was not installed backwards?

Are the shifter tabs on correctly, The ones that bold to the shifter forks, mine use to come loose once in a while and it would get stuck in between gears. I would have to get under it and wench it back into nuetrul, then tighten them back up.

The clutch was installed properly, that I know. I had never heard of the braking thing Bill. I'll have to bleed my brakes and try that. I just re- installed the brake cylinder so I need to put some pressure to the lines. I'm gonna try that tonight and then adjust my rod

You say it was installed properly-then the only other thing I can think of would be adjustment, how much end play is in the pedal?

I just went out and measured and I have 1 1/2" of end play on the pedal. I have a feeling I need to adjust the nut at the clutch fork. It looks like it has to much rod end sticking out

I work with heavy duty clutches but the principle design is the same. On the clutches that my company manufactures, we require no more than 1/2" play at the pedal, and 1/8" clearance between release bearing.
You have to much play for certain.
