Transmission cooler needed?
Good Morning,
So i am continuing my build on a 72 K10, and we have purchased a Mishimoto 3 core Aluminum Radiator. I have new steel trans lines from the TH350. My question is: do i need to install an aftermarket transmission cooler? I have a trans cooler just in case but if not needed it saves an extra step and also keeps the core support area cleaner and free of less stuff. Suggestions and comments please. |

Re: Transmission cooler needed?
If your powertrain is pretty much stock -- and if the radiator has a built-in trans cooler -- you shouldn't need an aftermarket cooler.
If you're building a hotrod or a workhorse that will see severe duty, I would add one.

Re: Transmission cooler needed?
A trans cooler is never a bad idea. But like mentioned above, you might not really NEED one.

Re: Transmission cooler needed?
My personal opinion is if you have it install it. You never know when you may need to pull something and instead of wishing you could have pulled it and not. I would install it just for good insurance on keeping the trans temp below 200* no matter what you used it for.

Re: Transmission cooler needed?
So the new radiator has a built-in trans cooler?

Re: Transmission cooler needed?
As said with a stock motor you dont need one. A high stall torque converter and/or a high hp engine is when you need extra cooling.

Re: Transmission cooler needed?
Ah, perfect! You're all set. I asked because some radiators have no provision for trans cooling -- in which case a separate cooler would be called for, even with a stock drivetrain. You are good to go!

Something I feel an automatic transmission equipped truck should have is a transmission temperature gauge.
