Rear suspension install questions on a 66
When I did the tear down years back the coils had only this hardware in the pic holding it in. The manual is a bit different even though its a 63 manual I figured its close. But the 63 must have had a welded square bolt there. In my case there is no welded square nut just a hole. So I think its just one nut holding the coil on...seemed like it might need a washer but I guess it doesnt. This seem right to go with? Or is adding a beefy washer going to help? In the pic I havent tightened up the top bolt yet.

You need new retainer plates and bolts, grade 8 would be beat.
Here are the plates. https://www.classicparts.com/mobile/...info/74%2D575/

Thanks Clyde, I kept the ones I took off and sandblasted and epoxy primered them all. I hope its not a no-no to reuse them?

Re: Rear suspension install questions on a 66
Also, got a question on the alignment of the coil and the retainer. I have a pic of what it looked like before I removed it. But from what Im seeing in the assembly manual the coil curls upward and into the notch of the retainer.

Currently I set it up like so to match the pic from before the removal.

I always replace the bolts. Just don't trust 50 plus year old bolts that were rusty.

I agree with PGsigns! Replace the bolts, cheap insurance!

Re: Rear suspension install questions on a 66
Doubled up on the washer, the ones at Ace were a little thinner than what was on there...plus the original was pretty curvy from the pressure over the years.

Re: Rear suspension install questions on a 66
So what do ya'll think about the retaining cup notch alignment thing I mentioned above? I guess going back to what it was doing originally is fine since I cant get the notch thing to click in place since the coil slopes downward vs the upcurve in the manual illustration.
