Swing away tire carrier Mount Questions - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

My next hurdle is mounting the swing away tire carrier I bought from a boardmember. Has anybody mounted one of these on a blazer that did not originally come with one? I only have exterior braces. Aren't there braces that mount inside the bed and quarter panel? Any advice would be appreciated.

All of the swing away tire carriers that I have removed had a backing plate on the inside of the panel where the hinges bolted on and the better the backing plate the less damage to the panel it was installed on. All have varied in one way or another. Some had a latch stud that was mounted in the center of the tailgate. These seem to have had the least affect on the body panels but then of course you have a big hole in the middle of your tailgate. Others had the latch on one side and hinges on the other. This type of carrier seemed to do the most damage to the hinged side probably due to the increased carrying capacity of the carrier, i.e. 2 GI cans and a spare tire. So I guess the thing to do would be to provide adequate backing for the weight you plan to carry.

Thanks. I've got a new tailgate and I'm hoping to do all of the drilling and mounting before prepping for paint.

The swing away carrier I just took off my blazer doesn't have any backing plate, it was just bolted on. There were 6 holes in bedside, 2 in the tailgate.

I've got a swing away sitting in my garage waiting to go on my green '69 and an original one on my orange '72. There aren't any backing plates on the tailgate, but there should be some backing plates inside the quarter panel. Here's some pictures of the one sitting in my garage.

The two in the box are the ones I did not get when I bought it. I guess some could be fabbed up, but if anyone has some out there I'd be interested in buying.
