Parking brake parts needed for a 66 shortbed
Looking to gather what I'll need for the parking brake re assembly. I kept the cables to match up if needed but the rods are not all there or hangers. Ill keep looking in my stash of mostly organized parts, but assuming I dont find anything more than the rod in the parts pic I took before taking that batch to be sandblasted...whats the punch list for my 66?

Re: Parking brake parts needed for a 66 shortbed
A little more digging and I found these, I think this is all I have on the ebrake..except the lever which i have but not pictured. The ubolts were labeled the day I removed them and I cant figure where they would belong in a parking brake system. Do I just start over and buy all new everything? I just want to get the right stuff and everything I need.

Re: Parking brake parts needed for a 66 shortbed
I think the U bolts are for the u joint at the rear end. The cable clamps are not original. I don't see any lever assembly attached to the crossmember. It appears the system has been changed from original.

Re: Parking brake parts needed for a 66 shortbed
Thanks Clyde and Bigmoe, I looked over the LMC link and compiled a shopping list..about $121 before tax and shipping. Not sure if the intermediate brake cable they have will work with the 700r4 trans real estate. Based on the pics I have posted do you think it will fit?
Also the diagram shows some points where the cable has tension on the front corners. I have the one rod that I think gets the passenger side but what are the other points needing to connect to that I may need to find? |

Maybe I wont need to drill, I found this pic I took during the tear down. I assume the bracket that LMC has would bolt in this spot.

My 65 looks like post 6 in the above thread. That LMC pic you posted looks like 67-72. I think a lot of people modify their trucks to the newer style so you might be okay with the parts you ordered. |

Re: Parking brake parts needed for a 66 shortbed
The 66-72 brake configuration is all the same, it will work fine, I did it on my 65 with a 4l60e.

Re: Parking brake parts needed for a 66 shortbed
Clyde, what are the 2 lines in that illustration I marked in red..the outermost ones towards the front. It looks like a hanger but its not listed as a part for sale in the diagram?

Re: Parking brake parts needed for a 66 shortbed
They are hangers, they provide tension to the main cable that makes the loop. When I converted, I was able to get those. Maybe call LMC and discuss??

Re: Parking brake parts needed for a 66 shortbed
Well I ordered the parts and right off the bat Im having an issue. The rear cable that clips into the back of the drum plate thats attached to the axle has a much bigger opening than the retaining clip can handle. It just wobbled around and as I pulled back the clip just slid right off the end of the cable. The rear axle may not be from a 66. Ill add some pics to show what Im dealing with. First a comparison of the cable I had before and the one I purchased from LMC. Ill add the item number too in case it helps.

Re: Parking brake parts needed for a 66 shortbed
I inserted the cable into its spot there in the back and it had about 1/4 inch play.

Re: Parking brake parts needed for a 66 shortbed
I searched for an install instructional on this and didnt find anything so far. I have the shop manual for a 66 and 73 and also the 66 assembly and I just cant find it. There is this clip that came in the bag with the cable but no instructions. I called LMC and found that they dont have any tech help. The lady at the call center politely told me that and also that she recommended me take it to a mechanic or look it up on youtube.

The retainer just slid off when I put tension on it.

Re: Parking brake parts needed for a 66 shortbed
Im tempted to just return the whole $155 order and clean up what I had. It did work. The boots though, not sure if these can be replaced.
