Packaging glue on NOS Trim
I recently purchased a set of NOS wood grain moldings for a K20 restoration I am going. To my disappointment, when they arrived, the GM packaging was stuck to the pieces, and when removed, leaves behind a residue on the aluminum and the wood grain. Iv tried several different products, and acetone seems to be the only thing that will remove the residue from the aluminum, and I’m afraid to use it on the wood grain. Has anyone experienced this, and Has anyone been successful removing this residue?
Regards, Jonathan |

Re: Packaging glue on NOS Trim
I would not use acetone on the wood grain. That will strip the finish of the wood grain. A guy could try a product called goof off. Just have to be real careful.

Re: Packaging glue on NOS Trim
Try Grease and Wax remover, it shouldn't hurt either the aluminum or the vinyl.

Re: Packaging glue on NOS Trim
this thread addressing similar issue may be helpful;
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=784120 a little tip regarding your printed woodgrain concern.. sample your cleaners and solvents on old factory trim goo gone, citrus oil cleaners, wd40, etc. would be my choices to start with.. ones that pass the test on old factory printed woodgrain go to work on packing glue.. good luck and please report your findings!

Re: Packaging glue on NOS Trim
I had good luck using Rain-X Bug & Tar remover.
I bought about 80 pieces of NOS trim from Mike Cofield a few years ago, and this stuff did great. Probably any brand would work. Try it on a small spot first, leave it on a minute or two, then rinse/wash.

Re: Packaging glue on NOS Trim
Thanks for all the feed back guys. Looking forward to making a supply run and getting started on these. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to report my findings this weekend because I’ll be out of town. Will let you know how it goes once I give it a try!

Try rubbing alcohol, mineral spirits and lighter fluid. They shouldn't harm the wood grain, and I bet you have at least 2 of them in your house.

Re: Packaging glue on NOS Trim
Again, I appreciate all the feed back. I tried good off and rain x bug and tar remover.
Goof off is a definite no-go. It melts the vinyl tape, and removes the 3D profile. The Rain-x Bug and Tar remover gel looks like the ticket. It took 3 applications, letting each application set for 5 minutes, then scraping with a plastic razor blade, and the residue is completely gone. On the first application, I applied it over the full width of the vinyl. It seemed to lift the edges of the tape ever so slightly. The residue is only in the middle of the vinyl, so on the second and third applications, I applied the product with a 1/2” artist’s brush in the affected area only. It appears to work well. Thanks again for all of the input Jonathan |

Re: Packaging glue on NOS Trim
Have you tried Adhesive Remover? It’s safe for paint, so I would think it’s safe for the vinyl and anodized aluminum
