Making up a cross member - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

OK, it looks like everything is on track for the trans swap. All I need to do is make up a cross member to support the rear of the 700R4. I wanted to ping the group and get your ideas, thoughts and suggestions as to how you would do one.

Because I have the 1960 GMC X-frame I cannot use any aftermarket (bolt in - no one make any so I'm told).

My idea is to purchase 2" x 2" angle and welld it to the inside of the X-frame and then bolt AND stop weld a cross member, I only have to span 12".

Has anyone had to custom rig a cross member?

OK, I was over thinking the problem, I'm going to bolt a C-Channel across the span and use a space block under the mount if needed. Sometime you cant see the forrest for the trees......

Speaking of Forest that's what I did. If I new how to weld I would have used square stock and welded a bracket to the side of it to drill the holes in. I think bolting it down to the c channel weakened it more than I would like.

I know its a manual but same bar type can be done. I had flat 1x4 square box on t5 on bottom of frame and this Porterbuilt cut and welded to fit mine inside frame.
