Broken Parking Brake cable

I pulled the brake release yesterday and the cable snapped right at the pedal. I figured out how to manually release the brake but it results in severe lacerations of the knuckles each time. Once I go get the replacement cable any tips on the best way to replace this? I haven't really looked at it too hard yet but I'd rather get some pointers before I do the trial and error B.S. Any help is appreciated.

Truck is a 1993 Chevy, 1/2 ton, 2WD, 6cyl, 5 speed, parking brake is a pedal on the left firewall by the door.
