Carburetors? any info would be great!

Hello all, I've got a few questions regarding the carbs that were installed on our trucks. Maybe there is a thread out there that explains a lot of this.

I see that Rodchester, Carter, were pretty common. Qudrajet 4BB and Dualjet 2BB? What sizes were offered and which intake would mate the sized carb? or were the intakes all the same just the carb

When looking to buy a used carb what are some tips to make sure your not buying junk. I heard that a lot of these carbs get locked up due the the leaded fuel attracting water then rusted shut. A lot of used carbs out there are missing linkage is that something to stay away from?

Are there any manuals on the various carbs to tune or rebuild?

I know i have many questions but these old carbs spark an interest and would like to know more about them.

Lars has a bunch of info posted on the corvette forums about quadrajets.

2 barrels would use a different intake than the quadrajet.

All quadrajets on these trucks were 750 CFM. The only 800 CFM ones were on 455s.

Leaded fuel is fine. Ethanol is the issue. Take the top off, look for gunk or corrosion.

The closer to stock original, the better.

Linkage - depends on the price. You can get a lot of replacement parts, or swap them.

I think the big question here is; why are you looking for a new carb? Asking best carb is a loaded question. The varied answers will probably make you feel like you're chasing your tail.

Not sure your background or skill level. But since you asked the question, I will answer based on the fact that you asked the question.

Get the stock replacement carb. Get the correct ignition. Learn to do a good tuneup. Then research and proceed from there. Rebuilt carbs are usually fine. You will have to send yours in for a core. If it's your original carb and you want to keep it, then spend a few more bucks and don't get the core refund and you can rebuild your original later.

Do one thing at a time. Carb... see change in behavior. Ignition.. see change in behavior. If you change five things at once and it don't run right or run well, you will be trouble shooting five things at once. If you are experienced, then maybe not an issue. But I am basing my answer/advise based on the nature of the question.

My goal is to return my 327ci back to its original factory condition. I've have the many years of auto experience, i just want to add to my knowledge. The only thing i don't have is experience in some of the older applications.

Dualjets came in late 70's cars, FWIW.

Do you still have the original Quadrajet on your truck?

If so, keep hold of it, unless someone has messed it up with a butcher job, you should be able to use and rebuild it.

If you dont have your original carb, look for a later (1975-1980) with APT, much easier to tune, better castings.

I am a strong believer that the Quadrajet is the best street carby out there, if set up right.

Qjet is Rochester. There were monojets, 2-jets and so on.
Rochester was a division of General Motors so it makes sense that GM used the carbs.

I’m also a big fan of the Roe book! I used it to rebuild the 4-barrel Quadrajet original to the ‘74 I bought for parts for my ‘65. I rebuilt the carb and it has sat on a shelf in my office for nearly 10 years!

I clickedon link to amazon jeffahart posted above for the Roe book and Amazon said I bought it January 21'st 1999. I a big fan of it also! But, I don't have any quadrajets anymore.
