Power Steering Bracket Swap
Truck Details-
-SBC SWP 350 -Square PS reservoir - not the stock chimney style -Muncie M22 4 speed manual My power steering is leaking - can't tell if it is the hoses or the seal on the pump so I'm going to check/replace both as needed when I get time over the next few weeks. I'd also like to eventually swap the headers over to stock manifolds down the line so thinking a few steps ahead, I'd like to swap my PS brackets to ones that won't hinder that transition. Can anybody ID the bracket on my truck today? It's a single piece that connects to the standard PS lower location and this one ties into the front header/manifold bolt location. It is not a stock bracket for 67-72 PS that would tie into the engine mount location. Question - can I simply swap out the bracket while I am doing the inspection/repair with something like these to avoid the headache of the header to manifold swap down the road? What should I keep in mind when I do this? JEGS 60702 Alan Grove 400L - P.S. |

Re: Power Steering Bracket Swap
I have an '80 Corvette with headers and this is the style of power steering bracket it came with and there are no issues. It's pretty tight in that area so this might be an option. One thing you will need to be detailed about is which water pump you have. You may have to shim the brackets some.

Re: Power Steering Bracket Swap
From your 2nd pic it looks like the bracket bolted to the header is for a manifold. To make it work w/ headers there's (or should be) a tube between the bracket and header flange.
You can buy a rebuild kit for the pump that includes all the seals. |

Re: Power Steering Bracket Swap
Why not just use a stock style 71 PS bracket and pump ?

Re: Power Steering Bracket Swap
The bracket you propose to purchase is essentially the same as what you have now, cut the top support off snd its the same.
I suspect you can buy the correct rear support that bolts to the motor mount from camaro and chevelle suppliers, better yet check the parts forum or post a want to buy. Power steering pulley is normally bolted on and driven from 3rd groove on crank, your pump is press on pulley type. I believe that could be a corvette pump, they did use short water pump til 1981, after 71 the pump has a larger hub and bolt pattern the pulleys offset outward i think 1/4 to 3/8 more than these trucks, very similar tho. |
