I tried ( that being the optimum word....) to polish a 72 outer.....didn't go well....There is a thin coating on the surface that doesn't lend itself well to traditional polishing methods....I polish bright work on aircraft flight controls( slats, leading edges on wings, inlets, etc.....), so I have some experience polishing aluminum.....I gave up....

I have heard you can use oven cleaner to polish it. I haven't tried mine yet, but have heard that from more than one source

grill
i have not done it ,but thought about it. i was at a show and a vender told me he used easy - off oven cleaner and a buffer.the trick is you need two people one to hold the dang thing . oven cleaner will take the finish off " clear " then use alummnuim or crome cleaner to finish. thats what he said, again i have not tried this but i would not be afraid too.

I heard you can lay it in a tub or something like it when you spray on the oven cleaner.

The Grille
Where did you find the grille and how much does he/she/you want for it. I'd like a straight grille to paint body color.
Thanks, Jeff

Have you considered powdercoating? I had some peices for my boat done in an aluminum finish, and they look great.

I looked this up under the search and found a couple of different things. Some said the oven cleaner thing and others said they used Drano. Then they polished it up and it looked great. Oh yeah, don't leave it in the drano to long.

I had one done for $80. It had dents and was yellowish. Looks like chrome now. Awesome job. I'll find the website and post it.

If you thik you'll have to replace it..the pull it off and try to polish it. Only thing you'll be out is a couple hrs labor.
