Most folks just chunk out the cash and replace the box. I've done that in the past.
I'm glad to see someone pursuing a DIY rebuild. I hope you make it happen, and I further hope you document it to encourage others to do the same. I've got a box that was left out in the weather with the lines off. I may pursue a teardown and rebuild of that at some point. If I do, I'd be thrilled to be able to follow someone else's experience, instead of attempting to blaze my own trail.
