more prolblems..

trying to get this truck on the road for the july meet,
looks like my adapter seals are leaking,allowing AT fluid to leak into the xcase.
do i just drop the xcase or do i have to remove the adapter with it,and btw how hard is it to replace these seals??/

Jamie,

Drop the back drive shaft, unbolt the the transfer case and adapter at the trans, unbolt the transfer case at the crossmember and frame and remove the transfer case and adapter with a floor jack(slide it from the crossmember to the jack it it damn heavy even outside the truck.) The seals are a simple to replace, just clean, unbolt the adapter, and replace the seals. Install is just the opposite. Hope this helps. Mark

I just went through my xcase. the adapter needs to be removed completely to replace the seals. it has 2 seals, one on each side. With a seal on each side, the center part of the adapter should never see transmission fluid or xcase gear oil. One of the bearings in the adapter are lubed by transmission oil, the other by xcase lube.
I was thinking of drilling a tattletale hole in the middle of the adapter to alert me when either one of the seals started leaking. I was afraid to do that though, but I still think it is a good idea. I was going to run it by some of the guys on this board first to see what they thought.

70Chevy4x4Nut, I'm almost certain my adapter between my Rockwell and 4 speed has a round hole in the bottom of it.

thanks guys, i was afaid of that..now i guess i`ll see if i can get them out of the truck( 8in lift,36.5 tires) without killing myself..lol

wonder why the adapter between my auto and 205 does not have one? I guess thats the way that adapter was made. Anybody out there have a tattletale hole on this type of adapter?
