Another power steering conversion question
Sorry guys but I need some help. I am putting PS onto my 1970 C10 with original SB350. I have a short water pump and have added all the pulleys needed to the crank and water pump to add PS and some day AC. I just put the pump on today and the pulley sits about 1/2 inch to far forward from the. I do not know for sure what the brackets came off of but was told it was a C10. Unknown year.
Was going to run out and buy the bracket from The Truck Shop, they are right down the road, but I am not sure if its an issue with one of the pulleys being wrong or the bracket. The pulley is new as well from The Truck Shop. One pick is of the pulley sticking to far forward and the other is my attempt to take a pic of the brackets. Any help is much appreciated. |

Re: Another power steering conversion question
It looks like you have the wrong crank pulley set , It doesn't line up with you water pump either . That PS bracket is the right one

Re: Another power steering conversion question
well that will really suck. both grooves on the water pump pulleys do line up with the grooves on the crank pulley. any suggestions on which pulley on the crank is wrong? it would have to be the outer one then wouldnt it? since the other 2 are actually a double groove single pulley.

I'm not seeing how your crank pulleys are any different. they all look very tight together like mine do. Looks like your PS pulley is more dome shaped and you can see more of the nut. mine is almost flat. wonder if that could be a problem? guess I will have to go out to the truck shop and see what they have. they dont take back installed items so i am out either a crank pulley or PS pump pulley either way at this point. So much for an inexpensive retro fit. Maybe rock auto has some pulleys. |

Re: Another power steering conversion question
I just went through this. Go to O-Reilly's auto they can order the pulley and it's returnable as well. 3 groove it fits perfect. It's a special order took 2 days to get it to SC.

Re: Another power steering conversion question
I assume you are referring to the crank pulley? Awesome. I’ll go by there tomorrow and see what they can do for me.

Re: Another power steering conversion question
looking like its an 8" balancer. I think around an inch and half thick. Tobe honest I just washed up for dinner and couldnt get a good measurement without getting filthy again. I will get a better measurement again tomorrow.
what doesnt make since with all of this is that it's not like i piece milled together all these pulleys. They are all meant for a C10 with AC and PS. Even my balancer. |

Re: Another power steering conversion question
had a similar issue with mine, 1972 with a 1979 motor in it, spent most of summer swap meeting, had alot of pulleys, finally went to a local mom and pop junkyard , found a 1979 squarebody with exact same setup as mine, bought all the pulleys and power steering pump,(even saved the rotton belts, still had numbers on them for reference), all lined up perfectly, before you could drive it but pulleys were off just enough to make belts squeal
just a thought

Re: Another power steering conversion question
I’ll keep that in mind. I do know this is the original motor. This was my grandfathers truck. But maybe the pulleys I bought were from a newer one? Seems that if all things are from or for the same year it would all be coming together just fine. Obviously something isn’t right

Re: Another power steering conversion question
Is it possible I have the wrong pump? I saw some other post that had pictures of various pumps. I had to bend the return hose hairline coming off the back a little upwards. Otherwise the hose would have hit the bracket. Or are the p7mps the same just the outlet of the return hose is different? Here is the pump I bought.

Re: Another power steering conversion question

also going to go over to the Truck Shop and see what they can tell me. all the pulleys i have came from them. maybe they sold me something wrong along the way. |

Re: Another power steering conversion question
I think its p/s pump or pulley. Compare pictures and look at spacing from back side of your pump pulley to the pump compared to Grumpys picture.

Re: Another power steering conversion question
There are 2 power steering pulley's that are key way with lock nut. One is for the 3 pulley set up and one for 2 pulley.
I went through 3 set's of pulleys before I got the right ones. All of them said for small block with short water pump. Not all of them will work though with the truck off set. You made sure the crank balancer is all the way seated right? Take and place wood over it and tap it in good then install the center bolt tight then tap and tighten it up until no more movement.

Re: Another power steering conversion question
Uhg. I feel the balancer is seated all the way since the pulley on the PS pump sites further forward than the crank pulley. Again, the water pump and crank pulley are lined up perfectly. Either way I have the billet pulley on the way. I will be able to at least rule that out.
I’m leaning towards the PS pulley also at this point. When I go by the truck shop I’ll see what they have to offer. If anyone has some various PS pulleys they want to send me to test I’d be very grateful. |

Re: Another power steering conversion question
so the truck shop cant help me. they only have the one PS pump pulley and all the other pulleys i have are from them and it doesnt work. my new crank pulley wont be here until tuesday. so in the meantime i am still searching out for other PS pulley options.
it looks like what i need is a PS pulley that is deep dished and is a keyway pulley not a press on pulley. i cant post up a WTB thread for some reason. But this one looks like what would work i found on ebay. can anyone confirm or deny and if anyone has one they could send my way that would be great. i will of course pay for it. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Black-GM-Ch...-/352087167249 |

Re: Another power steering conversion question
I wanted to post a follow up to this dilemma. I got it worked out. Thanks to everyone for all the input.
I went by the Truck Shop to talk to them about my options. Keep in mind, the pulley I had came from them. According to the gentleman helping me, he's usually pretty good, this was the only single pulley they sold and that it would be the same across all their parts catalogs. So I ordered a "deep dish" pulley online that set the groove to where the inner most groove would be on a double pulley thinking that would do it. Wow was that way off. Out of frustration, I took the pulley I bought from them originally, the new deep dish pulley and my pump to them to do some comparison. Low and behold, the pulley that this guy (different person), brought out to me, was exactly the one i needed. It set the groove just far enough back to align properly. I have attached the first pulley they sold me next to the new correct one. Correct is on the left and wrong is on the right. Correct one is not deep dish style or set back. What a wonderful thing power steering is. What used to take loads of effort I can now do with 1 finger. And my original manual box was so ratted out I am going to have to totally change my driving. Everything is so much tighter now. And way more sensitive to input. |
