292 3 OTT Clutch Advice
I'm finally going to put my 3 speed with a BW overdrive into my 72 C20 with a 292. I haven't bought a clutch for something like this in 40 years. Who makes a good clutch/pressure plate these days? Thanks.

Re: 292 3 OTT Clutch Advice
I have had real good luck with Luk clutches, well built and reasonably priced.

Re: 292 3 OTT Clutch Advice
I would look for a local clutch shop. There are places that build clutches for big trucks that will rebuild smaller ones as well. I bought a clutch kit from a chain store for $150 ish. It was all wrong. Got turned onto a local place here in Chattanooga called Feltons Clutch. They had what I needed in stock for about $100 and turned my flywheel too. Maybe you have something local as well?

Re: 292 3 OTT Clutch Advice
I swapped a 292 into a 68 that originally had a 250. The clutch I used didn’t last long, nor the cheap ass motor mounts available today..good luck. Tons of torque in those old 292’s

Re: 292 3 OTT Clutch Advice
I was hoping you would reply. So an 11" is normal. I should have it out tomorrow. Thanks!

Quote:
But an 11'' is good enough unless you're getting a 454. Eleven inches was standard for the 292 and SBCs up thru MY 1971.

Re: 292 3 OTT Clutch Advice
Back in the day when I was working as a mechanic and these trucks were still daily driven every clutch job I did on one I upgraded to a 12 inch regardless of the engine and drivetrain. Most fly wheels are already drilled for the larger clutches and it’s a built-in operation and just a few bucks more.

Re: 292 3 OTT Clutch Advice
If you're already running a 12'' don't downsize.

Re: 292 3 OTT Clutch Advice
Could be. I had '64 Impala with a SHP (300 HP 327) with a close ratio 4-speed and a 3.91 posi with a 10" clutch. It would smoke the clutch before it would smoke the tires. I would have liked that 11" clutch.
