swag to universal joint swap on steering
Hello all,
On my 66 Suburban the PO installed P/S but must have mis-drilled the holes. The power steering does not line up perfectly so the swag (steering coupler) though attached it does not bite well in the splines causing it to come loose (luckily I was going slow when it happened). To fix this alignment issue I heard you can switch to a universal joint(s). Does anyone have a write up on this or done it in their c10? thanks |

Re: swag to universal joint swap on steering
You can use a DD if you're willing to grind down shaft. Losing the rag joint will bring vibrations to steering wheel.

Ok, so if I’m thinking of this right I notch after the steering place a coupler there then use a DD shaft and place another coupler at the power steering.
I’d have to find a splined coupler then to attach to the PS. I have heard it will add vibration but I’d rather have that then the free flying steering wheel I just experienced. Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: swag to universal joint swap on steering
Did you grind that yourself or did you take it to a machine shop?

Re: swag to universal joint swap on steering
Cut, and ground at home, in place, then splurged on new colum. It would work but 3 on tree colum was just wore out and internals not working, blinkers on steel wire. Divot for set screws

Re: swag to universal joint swap on steering
I’ll check the splines again and make sure I have the right swag installed.
I’ll also look into the setup for the universal joint and if I go forward I’ll post up pics and how-to. It’s my understanding that there is a universal joint you can get that will attach directly to the spline without having to shave down the power steering spline. Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: swag to universal joint swap on steering
They also make a vibration reducer combo u-joint.

a 3/4 36 spline dd u joint and a collapsible lower shaft. straight shot from column to gear the blue tape was used for reference and no the splines do not hid bad picture angle

Re: swag to universal joint swap on steering
The column rods from a 67-72 will fit the 60-66 housing. I swapped mine out in that fashion and then added new bearings top and bottom. I then used Borgeson U joints at the column and the steering box as well as double D tube which was a cut to fit kinda thing. (I was able to get the vibration dampning style u joint for the box as mentioned by Rocknrod.) One U-joint alone will correct and angle but you'll need two to fix an offset. Borgeson's tech support helped me figure out what part numbers to buy and then I got them from Summit. Total cost not counting the 67-72 column was less than 300 bucks. Its your steering....fix it once and fix it right.
