Which Power Steering Hose?
Hi guys,
I have a 2005 5.3 and stock pump in my 65. The gear looks like an 80s style with metric fittings. What hoses work with this set up? Thanks |

Re: Which Power Steering Hose?
So the pump is 2005? There is a fitting on the back of the pump that takes a 1" wrench to remove. That fitting can be exchanged for one from an older pump that has the right size thread to match your steering box. You have 2 fittings to choose from and need to match your steering box. You can source one from a wrecker but they also sell aftermarket ones. I assume you have a power steering box from a square body? What year is the box because there are two different size fittings. I think they changed around 81.

Re: Which Power Steering Hose?
It is interesting. I posted about this in the LS swap thread back in 2009.
Hard to believe it has been this long? THIS THREAD HERE

Re: Which Power Steering Hose?
I like using -6 Teflon lined SS hose on the pressure side. You will need a -6 adapter for pump o-ring if its a LS pump. A 90 degree -6 fitting out and down to the steering box and -6 adapter and 90 degree fitting into the box. About 2 feet of -6 line? on the pressure side. Not real expensive. You can reuse the low pressure return cut to fit as needed.

Re: Which Power Steering Hose?
I swapped the fittings 9n my 71 I got the fitting valve and spring out of a 72 Chevy van and swapped it into my 04 pump and used the standard 1971 c10 power steering line way earlier to get a replacement hose and not having to get a custom hose maded

Re: Which Power Steering Hose?
Thanks for the replies guys. I think what you are all leading me to is changing the 5.3s pump to SAE type of fittings if my gear matches. I'll look today but believe my gear is metric too so then the pump and gear would match, are there pre made hoses that I can purchase or do I need to make something?

Re: Which Power Steering Hose?
If your steering box is the later metric model I wonder if you could make an 05 hose work? Maybe snag one cheap from a wrecker first to try. Your other option would be -an fittings and hose. Looks nicer but that way adds up. I bet someone has some left over hose you could use.
The low pressure hose should be easier to just get from an 81+ C10. |

Re: Which Power Steering Hose?
Get the fittings from the hoses you have, buy some hose sold by the foot from the parts store, and buy some single or double ear hose clamps, and make your own.

Re: Which Power Steering Hose?
Happens when you start your own projects too. That’s exactly the stuff I’d be posting about during my swap.
