Tall or Short 3/4 Ton Caps?
I ordered a set of four 3/4 ton caps off of eBay to cut and make front k20 caps. Two are taller in the center, and two are shorter, almost like a half ton cap. Diameter is the same, color pattern is the same, etc. Does anyone know the difference? Or if they will fit my truck if I cut out the center? I’ve got a 72 k20 all factory

Interesting, all the 12" dia caps I've seen look like the one on the right.

Re: Tall or Short 3/4 Ton Caps?
The shorter 12" diameter caps are the first version used in early '69 only. Later '69 thru '72 3/4 tons used the much more common taller version. An oddity to have the concave center on these early versions, while the taller style had the convex center thru '72 I would say your set was pieced together from 2 different year 3/4 tons, by the photo I would say '69 GMC and '73-'75 GMC.

Re: Tall or Short 3/4 Ton Caps?
That short one probably has been pushed in to make it concave. Here is a picture of my truck before I found a complete set of concave. The front is the taller later style and the rear is the shorter older style.

I doubt it, here are a few more pics. Look like cherry original caps to me

Re: Tall or Short 3/4 Ton Caps?
Here they are compared to an “outy” 69-72 style cap.
Am I crazy for cutting these up to make front 4wd caps? Or are people actively searching for these short c20 caps? It doesn’t make a difference to me but I hate to cut up a rare hard to find part if people are looking for them.

Re: Tall or Short 3/4 Ton Caps?
I learn something new every day. I'd have to imagine that the stubbys are very hard to find as 1 year only and GMC caps. Personally, I'd dig around for two more tall-uns to poke holes in. (I can't believe I'm saying this, but Chevs will work too for the poke outs)

About 5 years from you will run into THE guy who will pay a premium for those 1/2 ton caps you cut up and are unhappy with.
That is where I guess they are from |

Re: Tall or Short 3/4 Ton Caps?
I need some black tall center GMC caps
I would pay cash or trade you K20 cap cut and shape service on your caps or mine. I dont think the low center caps will look right or cut and shape well into K20 front caps. |

Re: Tall or Short 3/4 Ton Caps?
I agree, the short style always looked a bit odd to me also. I would definitely look for the taller style for a '72 K 20. Early '69 GMC 3/4 tons used the short caps on front wheels only, and the taller caps on the rear wheels to clear the Spicer axle. Chevy pickups had the same set up also, but came with the short style all the way around if it came with the Eaton axle. Later the decision was made by GM to go with the taller caps all the way around.
