I’ve been working on freshening up this k20 and one of the major projects was to repair the rust in the pass side rocker panel. Normally I would cut the spot welds and replace the entire rocker but after cutting the top out of it I decided to take a different approach in an effort to preserve the exterior paint. Let me know what you guys think.

I cut the top out, sand blasted the inside, then applied por-15

I had to fix a small corner of the inner rocker, then I primed everything to seal it up and let it sit overnight

Then I finish welded the patch in and primed it. Ready for paint

Nicely done!
I would still investigate the cab posts the rocker is welded to on the front and back. Here's a shot of my cab corners on the side with a virtually rust free passenger rocker panel attached

. I pulled on the thread...but glad I did. My cab is going to be a completely rust free zone, albeit with replacement floor and panels in several places.

Exactly what is going to be done to my truck. While I am doing a full repaint not necessary to replace entire rocker if not needed!

Nice job. I like your approach. Whenever I can I like to cut and patch rather than full panel replacement to retain the factory welded seams.

VERY nicely done. No matter how “Good” the repop panels are, there’s nothing as good as preserving the factory steel.
