Paint or Powder Coat ???????

My 70 stepper just came home from having rust repair and patina paint blended in where the rust was . Its almost time now to take the body off the frame so the frame can be disassembeled for blasting and Paint or Powder Coating . My question is what do you guys suggest , Paint or Powder Coat ? Its going to have LS Power and be a nice driver , nothing more .

If you scratch paint you just touch it up. If you scratch powder coat, you're going to have to touch it up with paint, and there's always a risk that rust will develop under the powder coat. I say just go with a quality paint.

I agree paint all the way. I've used Rustoleum on several frames and painted a couple of trailers with it, holds up very well.

Re: Paint or Powder Coat ???????

I love a good powder coat as much as the next person, but with anything that will be exposed to road elements, rocks etc, I would paint to make it easy to touch up. I've been very pleased with my AG111.

Re: Paint or Powder Coat ???????

If you go with powder pre-drill all holes needed so you don't drill thru the powder. I know it's a pain but on my frame off resto I removed all the brackets and cross members except the front/rear and the trailing arm cross member. The reason I did this so the paint can get behind the brackets and prevent rust. I sand blasted the frame and brackets, painted it and then bolted it back together.
Having said the above powder is much better as far as chip resistant. The key to choosing powder is a color you touch up with common paint colors.

Catalyzed Rustoleum sprayed from quart cans. Simple and durable.

Paint for a driver . But if your going to basically do a ground up why not go the extra and get it powder coated. Seems like a catch 22 here. This was going to be daily driver untill I got into it every bolt is stainless just went overboard with it . 68 stepside with a 250

Re: Paint or Powder Coat ???????

I did powder. It doesn't really scratch unless you really want to scratch it. Will handle chips much better as well. You don't want to take the body off to repaint and fix, so powder is the way to go IMO for a nicer build that you have put the dollars into. Just don't use contact cleaner on it....ask me how I know ;(
