Anyone swap in an lt1 with the original sm465?
I have a low mileage '95 z28 sitting in my yard that a co worker gave me. It runs great but has body/interior issues. Anyway, I am planning on putting the lt1 into my '72 k20. It has a sm465/205 combo in it that is going to stay in it. I will be on a time crunch to get it installed, so I could use any advise as to if there is any real differences between the original small block and the lt1 as far as mounting goes, specifically with the manual clutch linkage and flywheel/starter. The camaro is a manual trans, so it already has a flywheel, but I do not know if it will work for my application. Thank you in advance for any help.

I don't know all the answers you're looking for, but I can supply a couple of pieces...
The 1-piece rear main seal crankshaft requires a different flywheel than the old 2-piece used. You have a flywheel, but I don't know if it will work. I would measure the diameters and thicknesses of both, and that should get you in the ballpark. The 95 uses a hydraulic clutch, and your truck has a mechanical clutch. The question I would have about that is whether there is a boss for mounting the Z bar on the LT1 block. I don't think there is, but my 95 Z28 is an automatic, so I'm not sure. In any case, I don't think this is going to be a quick and easy swap.

I am currently putting a 97 vortec 5.7 in my 72 k10. It has the hole in the block for the ball stud. Mine has been converted to hydraulic clutch but the mechanical linkages would work.

Re: Anyone swap in an lt1 with the original sm465?
The LT1 block is different than your typical vortec roller block of the same era. You'll need the motor mount clam shells off the camaro as they mount different than the SBC, same location, but the bosses on the block are different. Not sure if you'll have provisions for a z bar. Check out LS1Tech for a TON of info on the LT1. Also LT1swap.com might have some more info as well. Keep that t-56, people pay for them, granted they pay more when they are set up for LS but they still bring money. I'm a member over at LS1tech and there's a wealth of info there on the 4th gen f bodys. I have a 95 I pulled the Lt1 4l60 out of and have put in a 350 and now a SBC 427 TH350 combo in.

You also might try looking over on the Pirate 4x4 forum. Lots of LS powered crawlers and other off road trucks over there.

Re: Anyone swap in an lt1 with the original sm465?
The boss for the clutch ball on a 4wd is forward of the rear boss used in 2wd because the engine sits back further in a 4wd. Your late model LT 1 may have that boss. If it does, it can be drilled and tapped. The first LT 1’s were gen 1 350’s which would have matched up all ways. Later model LT 1’s have differences as you are noting.

Pretty sure the 6-speeds have a different clutch type than an old 4-speed. I think you can use a Vortec 4.3 or 5.7 Flywheel for a 5-speed with the pressure plate for the late truck and a disc for your original truck. Just be sure that they are the same diameter.
