Full foam folding seat question
I picked up this full foam folding seat from member burnem today. I recently learned there were more differences in our seats than I thought there was. I'm curious if all the full foam bottoms are the same on every year, or did they change up year to year. I have some pretty decent full foams but off of 71/72.
I prefer not to pay the crazy prices of a new foam, so If I can use what I have or piece something together I would be pretty dog gone happy =)

Re: Full foam folding seat question
Only the 67 models had a folding seat option. Some 68s might have gotten them, too, but federal safety regulations took it away sometime in 68.
On the later seats some people will leave out one of the screws holding the seat back to the seat bottom to make it fold, but you have to re-engineer the upholstery to make it work. You will see what I mean if you really study how the upholstery is done. I think there are basically three different versions of these seats. 1) Early Version 67-68 +/- had coil spring bottom with thin foam, 2" +/-, and from what I have seen, foam backs. 2)69-70 had flat spring bottom with thin foam and foam back. 3)71-72 had full foam bottom and foam back. I had purchased a middle version for my truck and did a whole restoration and new cover. There are some pics on this thread. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=735220 I found the seat looked good, but did not ride well. Then I found a 71-72 full foam bottom seat and did a full restore on that one, and swapped out the cover. It looks great and rides really well. You may not need new foam. I decided to just repair the foam I had. the driver's side bottom and back foam needed repair. You can see some of my foam repair in the thread referenced above. It is pretty easy to do. Just go on youtube and search for automotive seat repair. You will find a bunch of videos. I did all of the work to the two seats, and as I have said before, I now know why upholstery shops get the money they do....you can really work up a sweat! Here is a pic of my grand daughter enjoying the refurbished seat. Good luck, and if you have any questions feel free to PM me. |

Re: Full foam folding seat question
This seat is a 67 and it does have a full foam bottom. No coil springs. Just curious if all of the full foam bottoms are the same foam.
Thanks for the extra info. It answers questions that come up often.

Re: Full foam folding seat question
CG, thanks for starting this thread. I am gaining info to hopefully re-do 2-3 seats. 2 for me, one for a friend
I have a 67 and a 68. I need to look at the 68 to see what it's seat type is. I bought a salvage yard seat, out of a 68 C-30. By it's condition, it appeared original. It had a dump bed on it at one time. THe bed was gone when I got to it at the yard. A couple of older guys were unbolting the hydraulic ram assy from the frame. I got the seat, fenders, hood, steering column, and a few other things.. Anyhoo. THe 68 C-30 seat has coils in the seat back, NOT on the bottom. THe bottom is foam, not sure how thick. I have another seat with same brackets/slider on it. It has a foam back and bottom. I will try to post pictures of these, soon. Astro, thanks for link! |

Re: Full foam folding seat question
Why do square body seats fold then if the government said it was bad. They dont have any locking mechanism to keep them from folding. Unless they repealed the law.
