Wiring nitemare 67 C10

Hello All, working on the 67 again. The truck has been starting, but I noticed it is starting when switched to the ON position. I was going to order a new switch, but decided to take a look before I did. Turns out this thing is all screwed up. PO did a number on this. I need help trying to get this puppy up an going again. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance

Who knows what circuits some PO added, modified, or completely eliminated.. When a harness is hacked up as bad as yours, there is no cut and dried answers to your questions.. Scroll down through the forums and find the ELECTRICAL threads.. In the "Wiring Diagrams" threads, you will find files containing detailed in color wiring diagrams. Down load and print them. All of your questions will be answered by following and sorting the various circuits...

For starters, that brown /white tracer wire is part of the battery charging circuit.. It's a resistor wire that parallels the alternator charge light.. It runs from the ignition switch to the bulkhead connector and winds up at the external voltage regulator as a brown wire..

Plus Unfortunately those connections that have been hot or corroded are always going to be a liability. They will have a voltage drop across them and eventually they will get hot and fail. You can get the proper Packard 56 connectors at NAPA to replace the sketchy ones. I use a small nail that has been flattened (Use a hammer and tap it.) The nail slides in the plastic part of the connector and pushed the small tab clear so the metal part of the connector can be removed.( See video) If your plastic part is too melted or distorted you may have to source a good one from another harness.

Thanks. I have another harness from another truck that i will be installing later. Just wanted to make sure i got everything connected correctly and take pics before i removed the old one. On the old one the wires are there, they just need to be cleaned up and ad new connections. The issue I'm having is where does the wire that goes to the ACC come from? Do we have 2 red wires that go to the BAT connections on the switch or 1? . The truck was running a few days ago before i removed the switch. Now its not doing anything.

When you have that hacked up mess removed and thrown away and the replacement harnesses repaired and in place and hooked up (as per HO455's advice) by using the wiring diagrams I suggested and posted by metaldoc, come back and ask those questions..

We're not magicians, we're simply experienced in these matters.. HO455 said you'd have problems with those old burned and corroded connectors... Do you not believe him??

I appreciate your input RustyPile, as well as the others who were quick to help me with my situation. I came here for input and that is what I got. I made some repairs to the harness as HO455 suggested by stripping the wires back, inspecting(they are actually in pretty good shape after a strip and cut) and I put on new connectors. Thanks for the diagrams Metaldoc.

PS I found on my 67 that some of the wiring colors that go to the front parking lights are different than the newer trucks.
Oh and there is no Acc position on a 67`s. It may have one if the switch got changed out at some point over the years but it won't do anything. I tried for several hours to get mine to work before I came here and found out the truth about 67's.

I rewired mine, added acc to my key and used a 1984 c10 fuse block.

Well I do not know how that started.

Willie,

First thing I see is ignition wire plug in connector has been deleted, most likely due to some wiring burning up.

Look to these guys for complete wiring replacement or pieces: http://www.wiringharness.com/

They make complete or partial pieces specifically for our trucks.

Now I have to review everything that has been written. By the way Rusty helped me most recently with the same type of issue.

So you have another harness, good. One thing to watch for is that some harnesses are different due to Dash differences, Heater and AC differences, and other options.

Let us know, the color coded wiring diagram does not cover everything yet can be used as a reference to get it back up and operational to stock specifications.

Thank you. Yes i have a harness from a 70 c10 with AC. A little different, but should work fine. with the repairs i made to the 67 harness, things look good, everything works except the truck starts in the ON position and i afraid the the starter will stay engaged. I don't know if it will disengage 100%,but i don't want to chance it. Its not supposed to be starting in the ON position right?

Since this problem involves engagement of the starter, I suggest you disconnect the purple wire from the starter and connect a buzzer or light to it for test purposes only.. The buzzer/light will tell you when the circuit is working properly and will save wear and tear on the starter..

The purple wire on the ignition switch goes through a neutral safety switch and then to the starter solenoid that activates the starter. This occurs ONLY when the ignition switch is in the START position . First thing to check is to be sure the purple wire is connected to the proper (start) terminal on the ignition switch.. If this checks out ok, then a wire that is "hot" when the ignition is ON is shorting to either the solenoid "S" terminal or the purple wire itself...
