'74 gmc 9500

Check out this '74 9500. In the link, go through all 12 pictures. You will notice something strange about this truck, although it has nothing to do with the 2 added axles.

Auction ended in 2018 by the way. If that was the price it sold for, someone got a great deal.

Not totally up to speed on all the differences on the big trucks but I don't see anything that stands out as odd on this one.

That's it. A 25,000 GVW truck that has only a 16,000 Lb Rear Axle. A Heavy truck with a Rear Axle that is less than many Mediums. The truck would actually be under CDL, lol.

Never saw anything like it. Even a small load would put it overloaded, especially with the 2 added Rear Axles. If the owner did not have it Re-Certified, since it is now a Tri-Axle, he would be legally overloaded in no time.

I never knew GM would let one out the door with a Rear that low. Normally a 9500 Single Axle would have 23 Rears.

Re: '74 gmc 9500

Something is screwy, yeah the VIN reads as an H series (single rear axle) and the rear axle gross is only 16,000 lbs., which is right for a single drive medium duty. Frame looks a little wonky above the lift axle. Truck probably started life as a de-rated heavy 4X2 duty fleet truck and somewhere along the way was stretched into a tandem. With 'Binder rear axles....

Re: '74 gmc 9500

I'm thinking the original buyer wanted a glider kit, but GMC may not have sold glider kits in this model, so it was special ordered with the smallest and cheapest rear axle bringing the GVW way down from the standard 33K for a 2 axle. But after the conversion, I say the GVW is around 48k now.
