292 air filter vs 250 air filter

My 72 292 has what i thought was a 292 air filter assembly. I ordered an element for it by the year and engine size. It doesn't fit the enclosure, too big. The element in the enclosure cross references to a 250ci engine. Is it a model year difference or an engine size difference? Thanks.

Re: 292 air filter vs 250 air filter

I noticed you had no replies so I'll take a stab at this. I'm currently replacing my 250 with a 292. I'm not positive as to wether there are different sizes or not. I believe they may interchange, but they did have an oil bath breather as well. Also had different heights spaces, depending on maybe having a power brake booster, power steering, or maybe even smog pump. Shouldn't be to hard finding a filter that will fit though. These trucks have been around for 50 years and a lot of things may have been switched over the years for one reason or another.

Re: 292 air filter vs 250 air filter

I have a real nice one on it now, not an oil bath. It's just funny that when I ordered an element for a 72 with a 292, it didn't fit. When I looked up the number on the element that was in it, the element was for a 250. In a Fram, it's a CA189 for a 250 and a CA192 for a 292. Apparently the canister is a little bigger for the 292. Thanks for the stab!!

Re: 292 air filter vs 250 air filter

I'd expect that the 292 filter would be taller, since the engine would snarf more air. As mentioned, who knows what got changed over the years?

That's what I figure. The air cleaner on it is in excellent shape. I don't think you could tell by looking at them what the difference. The element is about an inch taller. I don't know how much it restricts it's breathing.
I figure I can flip the top over while doing my regular driving and see if it makes any difference. There is a 292 unit for sale on the forum for $350 and I just can't pull the trigger on it. I don't know what I could get for the 250 one.

I'd bet GrumpyOldMan knows the answer to this. Shoot him a PM since he hasn't chimed in.
