Bucket Seats ???

Was Low Back Bucket Seats a real popular option in the Squares or just in Special Trucks ? Just wondering how many trucks came with them , Only ever seen a couple .

Re: Bucket Seats ???

Good question. I have never seen one in person that had them. Plenty of pictures, but no up and close ones. Mine has aftermarket hi-back buckets.

Re: Bucket Seats ???

Honestly I do not think it was a option except in crew cabs. As I have never seen one in person or on the internet that was claimed factory.

But rather something people did.

If you want buckets. You should consider high backs for safety.

Re: Bucket Seats ???

I have seen low back buckets several times over the years. But I cannot say if they were original from the factory or not. I wasnt aware that high back buckets were available in standard cab trucks. Not that I have actually paid real close attention lol

I don't think any regular cabs had buckets factory. Or if they did it would be exceedingly rare.

But I prefer highbacks for driving, and lowbacks for looks.

I am 99.9% sure it was an option. Not common but available.

Re: Bucket Seats ???

low back seats in blazers were standard until mid 1977. Vans were similar but highbacks optional some years. I’d guess trucks same low until 77
Page 9 says an option in 1977

Re: Bucket Seats ???

I owned a 77 with high backs and two 1980s with high backs. They were pretty common. In our neck of the woods. Mostly with us young guys at the time. Growing up in the country (rural) every one drove trucks. Cars were not near as common.

My 78 was ordered by the original owner with high back buckets. They were for sure an option.

Wow. I have had 4 running square bodies, and 3 others as parts trucks. Plus countless ones seen in the wild, and never seen one.

Anyone know the take rate on those?

Re: Bucket Seats ???

Definitely available in a Reg cab . I have a factory 1977 short Silverado with factory installed low back buckets and console. In 1978 they went to the high back buckets .

Re: Bucket Seats ???

My observation has always been 'low-back' buckets were in earlier year models & then 'high-back' buckets in later years. Kind of the whole progression as far as the safety aspect (lap-belts to shoulder-belts as well). High back buckets were probably safer as far as neck injury in rear end collisions. They were optional the whole time until the later end of their production run when they were mostly used in Blazers/Burbs. Them not being as common in trucks for the final years (81-87) could be because of corporate mandates (build option 'group' packages) becoming increasingly restrictive vs. earlier years when you could check off select options & wait for exactly what you wanted.

Re: Bucket Seats ???

Low to high back happened mid-77. Buckets were available on every light duty square thru 81, from truck to Suburban and everything in between. Truck buckets ended after 81, but continued in Blazers and Burbs thru 91.
Pretty rare, but not the most rare option of all IMO.

Re: Bucket Seats ???

I just like bucket seats , have them in my 97 3/4 ton , but they are high backs , sit great and love them . Also have a 97 single cab Dually with a worn out bench that I have Low Back buckets and Console from a 90'S truck for it . My 79 Big 10 Bonanza has a nice bench seat in it but it is very bright red velour , so the Lowback buckets and Console will be better to my taste in it .
Thanks everyone

I usually swap to buckets in the ones that stick around.
