Radio opinions for k20

I am currently working on my 69 k20. Previous owner has cut the dash to accept an aftermarket head unit. Should I...
Repair the dash with a new patch panel, cut a patch panel from an old cab, or just put in a newer style radio. This isn't going to be a factory restoration, but still want it nice. Probably using tmi seats and custom paint. Looking for opinions.

I'm not one to worry about stock appearances AND the vintage looking radios that fit the old dashes leave a little bit to be desired IMO (and they are expensive).

Put a modern headunit back in!

Re: Radio opinions for k20

It's a personal decision.
I will say when it comes to buying a truck I am more interested in a truck with an uncut dash. Where as some one who wants a new radio won't think twice about hacking a hole for it.
And frankly DIN radios invite thieves who don't think twice about causing you $100 or more of damage so they can pawn or resell a radio for $30.
For me personally I like the look of a vintage vehicle interior and nothing ruins the vintage look like a radio with crazy flashing graphics and messages like "Welcome Back" . Kind of like a movie set in the 1970's and then you see a 1980's car drive by.

Again it's a personal decision!

If the dash is already cut I would just put a modern unit back in.

Yup, if it is already cut, you can get a kickass Pioneer head unit for less than $100.

If you want the stock look, and don't mind painting the dash, then weld in a new panel. Do not use Custom Autosound for your radio. That stuff is rubbish as is the customer service. Use a Retrosound with hands free blue tooth. It costs about $300 but looks nice and works well.

Re: Radio opinions for k20

Thanks for the opinions, guys. I'm probably sticking with the cut dash and using an after market radio. I'm going to use a new dash speaker. Is that enough or do I need to add speakers elsewhere?

Re: Radio opinions for k20

Once again it is all about personal preference. Are you satisfied with listening to an old solid state AM/FM portable radio? Or do you really want to hear every note played in a song. My guess is no on the last or you wouldn't be asking the question. It is very likely you would enjoy some extra speakers. Putting two more speakers will fill the cab with sound better. Whether you put them in the doors or use some kick panel mounts, or put them behind the seat is up to you and how much work you want to put into them. Many folk put 2 speakers in the center dash speaker location. (I did)
Do a search on speaker location and look at all different ways folks have installed speakers. And if you really want to go down the rabbit hole there is a whole section of the forum dedicated to truck audio.
Here is a link to what I did for a stereo in my Burban. I had a similar situation in it. Scroll down to post 290 for the beginning.
Good luck.
