What's the deal with original bumper nuts?

These are original nuts installed with the front bumper and brackets. I imagine the same nuts were used for a rear bumper as well. Anyone know what type of nut they're called? I wonder if they're reproduced, I can use another eight or so.

What's the deal with the slots? Only advantage I see is penetrating oil, maybe that's exactly what the nuts are designed for. I don't see a locking advantage, perhaps I'm missing it.

Thank you

Re: What's the deal with original bumper nuts?

Its a locking nut, the pressure on the non slotted side cocks the slots into the threads.

And yes used in the rear too. I think only on the bumper but not on the bracket to frame, i could be wrong on that though.

Re: What's the deal with original bumper nuts?

Thanks again Randy. I didn't think they were locking because I can screw them on by hand.

I think they were used for the rear bumper brackets as well. For bar bumpers anyway, I think HD bumpers used a different config.

My C20 has those lock nuts for the front bumper brackets, on the frame side too. Per my notes my C10 did as well, but somehow I lost all but three off my C10, and and it bugs me....Less the front inner brackets, the assembly manual doesn't show lock washers for a front bumper or rear bumper bar, makes sense they'd use lock nuts instead.

Hey man, for the serious builderhttps://www.mcmaster.com/self-lockin...type~flex-top/

Re: What's the deal with original bumper nuts?

How is it they're always in the last place you look and the last place possible too? I looked high and low for these, thought to check an inventory of parts I had plated, yep, had eight plated, no sign of em. I put them in a box marked castle nuts

So I got 11, need 16, but that's what my C20 donor is for

Re: What's the deal with original bumper nuts?

Funny I just pulled the front bumper (68 C20) and thought, ..."that's odd they would use these nuts on the bumper".
Truck is from out west, and it was nice being able to pull the front fender, inner well and bumper off and no have to deal with one single rusty piece of hardware

Does have it's benefits. My C10 has lived here all its life, and hadn't seen water for 25 years less an occasional spray of the engine compartment & chassis. Only downside of dry is your steering wheel is more likely to crack

My C20 came from near Pacific coast though. The body is a mess, but the rest mostly good.

Funny I see you're from Northern Nevada, ...My truck spent most of it's life (as a plumbers truck) in Arizona, then went to California where I found it. Had it shipped (temporarily) to my brothers in Las Vegas.

Few places drier than Vegas and Az., your truck must be in great shape. Dumb luck on my part, everything popped right off for this novice less two shackle bolts. Only rust to speak of was a result of the battery, it destroyed the battery box. Luck has it the one in my rusted up C20 was still good. The core support might be better too, but I'm too lazy to pull it My 71 C10 had a top post battery, the 72 C20 a side post, coincidence? No, IMO.

That's a great find. Especially for our area. I'm from the Buffalo area and I also found a great truck from Arizona. I stored it at a friend's house in the Phoenix area for a while then had it delivered here. It's on my 71 swb build thread (currently stalled). Can't wait to see what you're going to do with it.

I'd like to see that too. I zoomed in, everything looks present and nice. Couldn't ask for nicer and a C20 too.

I'll start a thread on it
I got it here in NY this past November, just 'detailing', gonna leave the patina and drive it...

Quick preview...
Engine compartment before:

After detail...

Anyway, back to bumper nuts/bolts
