CPP117 Sway Bar Install on Stock Suspension
All - I'm installing a CPP117 sway bar on a stock suspension truck with stock springs and drop spindles. Its is supposed to mount with links to L brackets that need to be mounted to the edge of the lower control arm.
I also added stock height sway bar brackets on the frame (makes sense right)? So I go to install the bar, I bolt to the brackets on the frame and the ends of the sway bar rest over the control arm, about where the bump stop mount is. My thoughts are, maybe it mounts directly to the frame instead of the factory style brackets? Anyone have any insight? It looks like you should have the u-bolts along with the rest of their list so I would call them. My quick look over the instructions indicate you will need to drill the holes for THEIR bracket so using the factory ones wont work in this case. The included thread is more for the "stock" bar without end links.
I would just re read the included instructions and start there provided you have all the parts. Dave

I should have added pictures...
See where it sits over the control arm and how if I put bracket directly on frame, i need to cut bumper brackets.

installing a factory arm would probably be the easiest but since you have this one I would not give up on it. Like you said I dont know that you need the u-bolts I would think the regular bolts would be better. How does it line up when the truck is on the ground? That will make a little difference. I have a factory on on mine and have contemplated going for one with end links like you are working with since mine is lowered and a few other mods. The factory ones are on a lot of trucks on here so they do work and are pretty easy to find.

It looks like you need to mount the L bracket that came with the kit on the side of the lower control arm. The brackets you have mount on your frame is fine since your suspension is still stock. Also you shouldn't need to mess with your bump stops.

This may not seem pertinent, but the factory sway bars were basically the same through 1987. It might help to look at a stock sway bar.

Am I correct in where I mounted the factory sway bar mounts?
- Front hole = in the existing hole (not the slotted hole)? - Rear hole = drill the rivets out for the cross member and mount the rear of the sway bar mount using bolts in that location?

I think Custom 68 is on to something, how do things line up with the truck sitting on the ground?
1. Don't do any drilling 2. remove sway bar 3. Set truck on the ground 4. Mock up the sway bar by loosely attaching end links to lower control arms using existing hole in control arm 5. Check to see where front of sway bar lines up with frame and provide pics if possible Step #5 may be the part that requires some drilling of new holes in the frame to mount the front sway bar brackets. CPP states same in their installation instructions: "Fresh holes may be required to mount the sway bar brackets depending on original equipment"

I used that bar and looking at your pics I'm not sure you are using the correct frame holes. I will look at it tomorrow but I'm pretty sure mine mounted further forward than yours appears to. The end link connection should be just above the leading edge of the control arms and the bar should be level when the truck is sitting at ride height. I did find that you can't use the stock holes on the arms for mounting the L brackets. The holes need to be an inch or two further to the outside. The bar is just too wide to use the stock holes.

It also just didn't look like the instructions were being followed. I think the end links are what position it. Then drill the holes in the frame. It doesn't look like any of the "factory" holes are used.

Custom 68 is right. The instructions form CCP says suspension should be at ride height. So put jack stands under your lower control arms and sit your truck on those jack stands.
Then put the end links together with the angle brackets and mount them on the sway bar. Then line up the angle brackets on the control arms and drill into the control arm and mount the angle brackets. Finally, mount the sway bar bushings and bracket to your frame. Also the way CCP's drawing is shaded makes it look out of shape. |
