Tail light harness question
Looking to get a taillight wiring harness for my 72 stepside. Are most of the c10 wiring harness univeral for stepsides and fleetsides?

Short answer is "no" from what I have found looking at them for my 67 step side. The intermediate harness from firewall to rear frame area is the same but the final harness section is different for stepsides as they are listed separately from fleetsides.
Look at GMC Pauls web site, under Electrical on Wiring Harness Page 3.

Tail lights mount outside of the box on the stepside and in side the box side is the difference
