Power Steering pulley alignment.
Hi I'm trying to add power steering to my '72 C20 and I'm having issues with the crank pulley and the ps pulley lining up. They are slightly mis aligned. I have the original ps pump brackets and these pulleys. https://www.ebay.com/itm/GM-Black-Si...72.m2749.l2649 https://www.ebay.com/itm/Chevy-Small...72.m2749.l2649
Any ideas? (And yes the ps pulley is on all the way) Last edited by Chilly178; 06-13-2020 at 06:00 PM. |

Re: Power Steering pulley alignment.
Might put a straightedge on there and measure to see exactly how far off it is, then look arounf for a shim, or make one.

Re: Power Steering pulley alignment.
Just thinking out loud, but maybe there were two PS units with differing shaft lengths that year (s) or maybe it is a BB/SB part mixup. I had a problem like that when a parts place sold me a BB fuel pump for my SB. Slightly different operating rod. Same kind of thing with the short and long SB water pumps. Given the correct mount brackets and correct pump, that misalignment should not be.

Re: Power Steering pulley alignment.
I am thinking you have the wrong pump. The shaft do not stick out like that on my stock rig.
Should not have to push the pulley so far in. Just checked RockAuto, for a picture reference. It appears they have some castings that have raised mounts, checked both big block and small block applications. There is definitely a difference in some of the castings on the pump assembly, not the reservoir. Last edited by toolboxchev; 06-14-2020 at 12:31 AM. |

Re: Power Steering pulley alignment.
If thats a press on pulley are you sure its all the way on? the earlier pumps had a key with nut holding the pulley on.

Re: Power Steering pulley alignment.
It is not a press on pulley it has a key way. It may look long because I left the nut off for the pic.

Re: Power Steering pulley alignment.
Mine in my 69 was off slightly and changing the crank pulley corrected it. Went from a two groove like you have to a three groove.

Re: Power Steering pulley alignment.
That can be the issue the pump setup for an ac truck
Look up 3 groove crank pulley for an air conditioning truck |

Re: Power Steering pulley alignment.
So do I need a two groove crank pulley for my ps add on pulley or a actual 3 groove crank pulley?

Re: Power Steering pulley alignment.
Here is a pic of my 3 groove water pump pully from my 69 which had factory ac
I no longer have the truck to compare ps pully differences I can dig around to see where my 72 2 groove pulley is Last edited by gmc684x4; 06-14-2020 at 07:37 PM. |

Re: Power Steering pulley alignment.
Since I already had a chrome 2 groove water pump pulley( AC is on the list to do soon) I got a chrome 3 grove pulley from summit. It's actually two pieces stacked a 2 groove and a single outer, the PS belt aligning better was an added bonus.

Re: Power Steering pulley alignment.
I mistook my 69 water pump pully for the crank pulley
I looked at my other trucks they no longer have a ps pump You could get a second set of hands use a straight edge and a tape to see where your belt needs to go to compare to a parts store 3 pully or two pully for the crank I think most of my 67 72 small block stuff went with my 69 when i sold it |
