Oil Leak!!
Went and drove the truck back from the exhaust shop and i could smell oil. SO I pop the hood and find oil dripping from the bottom of the timing chain cover/front of the oil pan. This is a brand new fkin rebuild on this engine and it seems that everything has to leak!! I'm gonna try snugging up the oil pan bolts a bit and see if maybe it's just weeping a bit from the engine finally warming up. sound like that could be the problem??

Those multi-piece oil pan gaskets can be a *****. Lots of RTV is required. Hope it works out.

It could be a scored harmonic balancer shaft leaking thru the seal.you can get a sleeve repair kit that slides over your scored shaft if that is your problem

sorry to hear that dubie but i know your pain. I too recently rebuilt my 350 and took it to the exhaust shop and on the way home i stopped at a intersection and noticed smoke coming out of the hole in the transmission hump where the trans-case shifter goes through. I stopped and looked underneath and oil was dripping off of the back of my pan on to my brand new exhaust pipes. was i pissed. i drove it home and could never stop the leak. i tried tightening my pan, putting more gasket sealer on, checking the manifold, valve covers, dist, oil pressure sending line, every thing. i think either i have a bad oil pan gasket or the oil pan lip is bent and not seating correctly. I sure hope it is not my rear main seal but i am going through about a quart of oil every 3-4 days. I hope you get yours fixed.

I can't explain why but everytime I put a chrome timing cover on it always leaks. I bet I have done this multiple times and tried resealing them and they alwasy leak, stock or aluminum ones I have never had a problem. If you look close you can see if it is coming from the crank pulley or leaking from the oil pan. Unless the oil pan bolts are extremely loose, usually tightening them up wont do any good and if you have over tightened them then you need a new gasket.

I am sure it must be the oil pan gasket. The oil is coming out right where the stock timing chain cover and the oil pan meet. I am going to try snugging the bolt up a bit and see if thats the problem. If that doesn't work. I'll be dropping the pan on Monday night and replacing the gasket

the way to go is the one piece oilpan gasket and old used oilpans must be checked for dimpling around the bolt holes from over tightening, new oilpans are pretty cheap

Check to be sure that the threaded hole on the front of the block just to the pass side of the timing cover isn't the source. This hole runs directly into the fuel pump drive pin, it can and will leak oil if not plugged with a short bolt and sealant.

If it does turn out to be a bad gasket, go the extra mile and get a felpro 1 piece pan gasket from your parts store. They're a little more money, but they're resuable, usually don't leak, and they're tough (they have a metal core).
