Useful or junk?
Hello. I just got this auxiliary tank and sidewinder III winch. They came as a package deal with some other parts.
The winch still says Hickey but the paperwork is marked 1987. No controller and no mount. I didn’t know they made a sidewinder 3. Is it worth trying to piece together the rest of what I’ll need to make it useful? Or are the sidewinder 3 winches notorious for being piles of crap compared to the earlier versions. The seller told me the winch came off his brother’s 72 blazer along with this auxiliary tank. He didn’t have all the particulars about the tank. Does anyone know who made this style tank. Doesn’t look like any hickey tank from the catalog. Thanks for any help. -Vinnie |

Re: Useful or junk?
Here is the fuel tank. There are two holes on the top that go all the way through the tank. I assume they are for mounting. Thanks again

Re: Useful or junk?
Just a guess on the tank..... My K20 has twin Travel Tanks (popular back in the day but now defunct) with holes like yours has. There are long mounting bolts through the bed floor & through the tanks. Completely different shape of course, but similar flat sheet metal / sharp corners construction.

Re: Useful or junk?
I think someone would pay half decent money for either

Thanks for the info special-K, By the way I liked your shortbed K10 with camper in the vintage picture section. I saw this shortbed today. Not like your old truck but still cool. Old forestry pickup.

Re: Useful or junk?
Thanks on that Ochre SWB K/10. It was a great truck. That had a Hickey Sidewinder on it.
That truck is cool. Looks pretty solid too. It's odd that it came with bucket seat but not those but they match. But but but. Those are clearly '67 seats

Re: Useful or junk?
Damn... one of the coolest things about these trucks is the way they could be ordered... hugger with blue vinyl. The combinations that some of these trucks were built with is really fascinating to me.

Re: Useful or junk?
I can't answer your questions, but if you decide to get rid of the Sidewinder, let me know--I'd like to find one to put behind the rear bumper of my '62 K10, to augment the PTO winch I'm putting on the front of it.

Re: Useful or junk?
you might want to post that winch bracket picture in the k5 subforum, seems I recently read they are more rare than the winch..
and the winches fetch a couple to several hundred depending on condition and completeness.. good luck!

Re: Useful or junk?
Thanks for the info Killerbee.
Brad54, I’d sell the winch but I need the bracket in that picture for another winch. Doesn’t sound like you’d necessarily need it anyway if you’re thinking about throwing on the rear. |

Shoot me a PM if you have a price in mind. I was going to go with a Badlands (I've got one I've used on my car trailer for the last several years, have used it a TON, and can't say anything but great things about it)... but I like the idea of the more compact design of the Sidewinder, and I think it'll be easier to operate to free-spool it. I've got a PTO winch for the front, but if the engine isn't running, the winch is DRT. So an electric winch in the back would be a good back-up.
