305 Stroker motor

Anyone ever done it or had it done to their 305? I seen an article years ago in Super Chevy about this and was wondering what other people thought. just thinking what to do when the 305 needs a rebuild!

when a 305 needs a rebuild, 2 words, scrap iron. just get a 327 or 350, the 327 has the best internal geometry of all of them, but a 350 would be a lot easyer to come by and it also has more cubes than a 305 to boot.

Yeah you can do all sorts of neat stuff to a 305, but why? Why not get the extra cubes of a 350 and get much better results for the same money spent....

Aren't the crank different in the 305?

If you build a stroked 305 (3.75" stroke) and .030" over, 10:1, Torquer cylinder heads, XE274 cam, 750cfm, headers with mufflers, single plane intake, then you would get about 384 DD2000 HP and 391 torque.

350 with .030" over and 3.48" stroke with same heads, same cam, same compression ratio, same 750cfm carb single plane intake. would make 392 HP and 409 torque

so, if you built the 350 with the same 3.75" crank then you just blew the 334 out of the water hehe.

The 383 would then make 389HP and 428 torque with the same setup, put a more proper cam in it then you get mucho more HP also.

dont waste your money on stroking a 305, "stepping up" to a 3.75" crank in a 305 will only give you 335 ci, then not only does the 350 have better valve shrouding than the 305, but its still got more cubes in stock form to boot.

One of the problems you will have with a 305 is the lack of ability to put bigger valves in it, thus some what killing performance. I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with a 305. But because the bore is to small, bigger valves like 2.02's will be shrouded and hamper performance so a max valve in this would be a 1.94. Putting in a longer stroke helps tourque and this would probally be good in a 305 and it would even get better gas mileage than a 350.

IMO drop the small block and pick up at 427 or 454, my 454 gets about 16 on the highway and about 13 in town. but thast only if i keep my foot out of it... the worse that i have gotten with my 454 was 10, and tahtwas with alot of showing off and burn outs.
