engine not fitting in bay
Hello, I have a 1967 Chevy pickup that I have been rebuilding, also bought a totally rebuild engine from the local automobile parts store, when I tried to install it in the engine bay I noticed its length is too short. the rubber mount on the bell housing do not reach the cross member for support of the engine by approximately 2-1/2 inches, is there such thing ???. please help.
I have a friend which removed the previous engine which we interpreted to be a 350 engine, he can't recall how the engine being held up in the bay. Originally in this truck was a 292 cu. in line-6 engine Last edited by freds; 06-24-2020 at 08:52 PM. Reason: using better discription |

Is your new engine a 350 small block? Or a Big block?
What was the original transmission?

The engine mount brackets for the engines are different. The frame has three holes on top of each frame rail to bolt the engine mount brackets to. They are approximately 2 5/8" apart. The 6 cylinder mounts in the rear holes and the V8 mounts in the front holes except for 4 wd models. Here, take a look at mine which also shows the measurement between the holes. Mine is a 350 V8 in the stock location but I have an automatic trans.

I really don't have the answer because Oreilly auto part is not sure.
and the transmission I have is a 4 speed manual Saginaw, which is the same one I used on the previous engine |

its been some time from when I did mine and I went with an automatic witch is a whole different mount but I think the trans has different holes for different engine trans combos too . unfortunatly they are riveted in and need to be removed and rebolted in new position .

thanks for the info. presently thinking of moving the perches to the rear hole which would probably move me closer to the cross member. because I'm not contemplating on unriveting the cross member. if I did anything else, I'll also have to move the floor stick shift.
The engine I have is the PTQ: VCO9 : 5.7 liter, still waiting to find out weather its a small or large engine |

5.7 liter is a small block 350.

You pulled out a small block gen 1 engine is this motor your droping in a gen 1 small block ?
I do not reconize engine code there is a 5.7 Ls engine The only main difference in gen one small blocks is the threaded boss for clutch zbar ball which later model blocks only had on 4 bolt main variants Do you still have the old engine you can look at casting number at back of the block to help id it Gen 1 is 283 right to vortec 5.7 liter What block casting number is your new engine https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=H0mG4uU9xFk |

Are you using the same bell housing that came out ?
Which tranny cross member are you using ? One at back of tranny or the rivited one the bell housing attatches to ? If the bellhoung crossmember is the bell housing getting hung up not letting it fully go into place |

A little bit of searching came up with VC09 (not VCO9) 5.7 as a reman 67-77 4 bolt main 350 If you took a 350 out the new one should go in the same.

yes, I'm using the original bell housing that was used for the previous engine. the cross member I'm using for the transmission is the one behind the riveted one which is approximately 12-1/2 inches away. the rubber mounts on the bell housing are short of reaching the riveted cross member by approximately 2-1/2 inches |

yes, that VCO9 5.7 liter is a 4 bolt main 350 engine that was produced in 1969 according to the paper work, but yet you can see the problem I'm going through. |

Are you lining up transmission input shaft ? And have you lined up the clutch with an install tool if clutch disc too off center the shaft wont go in If alignment is good put transmission in gear and spin the drive shaft to help line up clutch splines to transmission splines Another trick is use long bolts to rough align block to bellhousing if bell housing is installed to tranny with tranny in the truck Last edited by gmc684x4; 06-25-2020 at 03:44 AM. |

I keep thinking like i deal with a motor swap with my 4x4 trucks where the tranny and transfer case are dealt with separately
Do you have the tranny installed on the bellhousing when your dropping it in ? If so check to see what is hanging it up on Or mount the tranny and bellousing first then drop the engine in |
