Engine Mount Question with Pictures - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I can't say I've done a million engine swaps but I have done a few. Of all the swaps I've done on small block Chevys they always had the engine mount with the bolt holding the engine half to the frame half of the mount. Now that I have a bunch of stuff out of the way I can see the mounts on my truck are clearly different. Of course coming out will be pretty easy but if I have to line up the bolt holes on the engine it could take a long time. I circled the center bolt on the style of mount I am used to (it is on my '72 Chevelle).

So my question. Do I just get the weight off the engine with the cherry picker then take the bolts off the engine?

I guess I have two questions. Can I use a mount like on my a-bodies when I reinstall the new engine?

The trucks and "A" bodies use different mounts. The truck mounts, (except the 72 BB) have (1) 7/16" bolt, (5/8" head) that screws into the rubber mount from below.
Getting at them is a little tricky but a lot easier than trying to remove the three bolts holding the mount to the block.

Using truck style mounts on "A" bodies could be very difficult.

When I removed my engine, I just left the engine mount bolts on, and unbolted the engine towers. There's 3 easy to get to bolts on these, and it was the easiest way IMO...

If you look closer at the picture his is a 4X4. The front mount is different. I will be investigating this subject a little closer when I install a big block into my 72 Cheyenn K/20. I have the 4X4 crossmember out of a later model truck that the engine mounts on the clam shell style motor mounts. WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com

Yes it is a 4x4. I'm just about ready to tackle the mounts. It looks like if I unbolt the mount from the cross member it will be easier.
However, lining up all those bolts in the future will be a challenge.
