Anyone with Gen V experience?
I’m nearly done with all my sheet metal work on my 56. Next step is to commit to my drivetrain. I was planning on using an 6.0 L96/6L90, but came across a Gen V 5.3 L83/ 8L90. I’m building a driver and really like this drivetrain in my 2019 Silverado Was wondering if there is anything with the newer generation LS that is a problem with this swap? Any advice would be appreciated!

That rear mount tank in your 56, make sure the pump you purchased is suitable for the L83 direct injection system. The L83 uses a non return fuel system so you will have simple plumbing... User cornerstone is doing a Gen V swap in a 67-72. From the research I've done, it takes a little more money to get a Gen V swap done, but the technology and power is worth it and they seem to come cheaper than Gen 3/4 with similar mileage. I like my 5.3/8L90 in my 2016, it's impressive how well it gets down the road.
A few things to point out: -Power steering - the L83's do not have a power steering pump as these trucks are electric rack n pinion, so you'll have to buy brackets and a power steering pump. I think ICT Billet has the best option. -A/C - it is possible to use the factory compressor with Vintage Air. -You might have a conflict with the L83 oil pan. It doesn't work with the 67-72's as it hits the crossmember so you have to buy the Holley oil pan. Maybe you would be okay, but I don't know anything about your body style. -Fans - unlike Gen 3/4 LS's, Gen V ECM's run off PWM (pulse width modulation) which is a different way of wiring fans and also limits your options on fans. Basically, the fan(s) will run at variable speeds instead of high and low or just high like most fan setups. They take a lot of juice. 2016 Camaro SS fan might be a good choice for your setup given the narrow radiator. -Readouts for speed, oil pressure, coolant temp, RPM, are all via the OBDII port. -2014-2016 powertrains are more desirable as the ECM's are more accessible. -8L90 is not very user-friendly in terms of service as it is a sealed unit. It does not have a dipstick or fill tube. -6L80 has a dipstick/fill tube -It's best to find a complete engine/trans with throttle pedal, ECM, and wiring harness than to piece one together. It's not as easy as Gen 3/4. I would check out swaptime on YouTube (also has a website) as well as standaloneharness.com as they are both good references. The aftermarket is coming along well for support of these swaps. I'd really like to do one in the next project. I've done a Gen 3 and 4 so I'd like to a 5.

One of the down sides to the Gen 5 is the DOD system. Many folks have deleted them mechanically and electrically.

Re 8L90 trans as a "sealed unit"....
True, there is no normal dipstick in these units. The correct fill level is determined by an extension of the drain plug fitting (GM speak is a standpipe) into the trans pan. See image Filling the trans requires the removal of a rubber plug midway along passenger side of the trans...a point to remember access wise when installing exhaust pipes.... A typical trans service, new filter and gasket etc will require approx 8 quarts of Mobil LV ATF HP transmission fluid. To check level, engine must be running, transmission in Park and trans case temp of 130 degrees F. The level check bolt in edge of pan is removed...excess fluid will drain out. Failure to have the engine running during this process will cause excess fluid to be drained out, resulting in a low level condition.

Thanks everyone! The power steering may be my biggest obstacle. Doesn’t sound like there’s any problem with reprogramming. I would probably leave the DOD/AFM/VVT as I’m looking to build a driver. 380 hp should get me down the road!

From what I've seen, you can use the typical non-PWM pump (like a Walbro 255) with an external regulator. I think the input pressure ranges between 45 and 75 psi, then the pump on top of the engine raises it above 1,000. The harness can be reworked to turn the fuel pump on just like Gen 3/4.

You're going to love it! The L83/8L90 in my 2016 gets down the road pretty well. Not much RPM drop in shifts and plenty of gears to choose from.

Nice! Instead of using one of the outdated fuel delivery systems you might want to look into a Vaporworx controller. Purchased one I am going to install with a ZL1 pump to feed my LSA. Carl is great to work with.
