Tail gate link assemblies making noises going over bumps
On my 1968 Chevy C10 SWB fleetside I think my tail gate link assemblies are rattling around making noise when ever I drive on rough road or hit a bump. Is there some sort of rubber bumper or something that could be worn or missing on my tailgate that would cause then to move around and make noise? I can shake my bed back and forth and can hear one or both of them making noises while the tail gate is up in the closed position.

Re: Tail gate link assemblies making noises going over bumps
Check the rubber stops on the bed. If tailgate has no play. Tweaking the control rods to make them shorter and tighten up with a pair of vice grips or pliers can help as well as sliding piece of vinyl or rubber tubing over the rod. Had to deal with door rattles in my earlier car stereo installation days.

Re: Tail gate link assemblies making noises going over bumps
There are supposed to be two rubber bumpers at the tailgate (both sides for 4 total) to keep it from rattling. A round one for the tailgate and a screw-on square one that goes with the link assemblies. There are also square ones on the control rods inside the tailgate. See below...

Re: Tail gate link assemblies making noises going over bumps
I am missing both the rubber bumpers on the driver side. I will get some new ones and also replace the passenger side.

Re: Tail gate link assemblies making noises going over bumps
My truck used to to this also, but when I replaced the original (worn out) front and rear coil springs, it went away. That's even with using the RockAuto "heavy duty" springs all around.
Something to think about if your suspension is old...
