Firewall painting
I’ll start by saying Im not a paint and body man, but have dabbled in it and always been pretty satisfied with my results.
I have a 69 C10. Cab is off frame, and has been blasted with epoxy primer for over 5 years. Ive had it stored inside since it was primered. Called a local paint store and told them Im looking for enough 2k primer 507 brigade blue Paint to paint the firewall, behind front fenders, cowl and inside cab. They said 2 quarts of each, basecoat/ clearcoat and priced it at $350. Said I need to lightly sand the epoxy and prime 2 coats of 2k, 2 coats of base , 2 coats of clear. Does this sound accurate? I havent bought any paint in quiet a few years. I plan to get a professional to paint the outside of the truck later on. Im just trying to keep from having to totally disassemble the truck again after I get it back together. |

Re: Firewall painting
I have only painted a few vehicles, but the paint quantities sound about right for moderate to good coverage. I tend to lay more primer and paint on than the professionals so, I might need more of the primer and base...the clear amount would be good for me though. I can't comment on the price since I have not done BC/CC in many years. If it where just the firewall in the engine bay...a quart each would be plenty, but, depending on the extent in which you take the cab interior would determine the amount needed. Consider doing the cab interior first with the 2 qt each purchase. That way you'll be able to gage whether you need more for the firewall.
I have had good luck in the Paint and Bodywork forum here from some of the more intelligent ones in that arena. It's worth posting there too.

Re: Firewall painting
You might want to talk with your paint jobber about using single stage paint instead of base/clear. That way you only have to prime, sand , then paint the color. The clear is in with the color and you add activator and reducer. It'll save one step and be as durable as base/ clear.
