I need to replace this temp sensor. How does it come apart from the coiled wire?

When I replaced mine it was all one piece, it included the sensor and the wire to the gauge.

DUBIE... I THINK WHAT YOU ARE DESCRIBING IS A SENDING UNIT WITH A CAPILLARY WIRE PERMENANTLY ATTACHED TO THE SENDING UNIT & THE GAGE. IT'S A MECHANICAL GAGE AS COMPARED TO AN ELECTRIC GAGE, WHERE ONLY A WIRE (PROBABLY 14 OR 16 GA.) IS HOOKED FROM THE GAGE TO THE SENDING UNIT.

It is a 1 piece emchanical gauge setup that the PO installed in this truck. I have an electric sending unit here that I would like to hook up to the the factory gauge. Was the wire "green" for temp sensor on our trucks??

Dubie,

My '69 C10 had the stock electrical temp sending unit on the 6 cyl, and the wire to it was green, with the funky little sideways plug on it. I plan to hook it to the sending unit that came in my '84 SB, which has the spade plug, so I guess I'll need to put a new end on the wire.

FYI, I'm planning to keep the electrical temp setup for the idiot light (no gauge package), and run a mechanical sending unit from the SB's thermostat housing for the underdash gauges. The housing has 2 extra holes from all the smog crap (which has strangely come up missing?!?!?), so it should allow me to run both.

Keep at it...I'm watching your progress, and about 20 steps behind you...
