Re: Installation / Mounting instructions for 1972 DG4 mirrors

Anyone have a clearer picture of the mounting instructions? I'm having difficulty reading the dimensions for the DG4 location.

Thank you!

I looked in the Factory Assembly Manual but didn't see anything about the DG4's. The illustration you posted must have come from the Chassis Service Manual and the only one of those I have in the house is for '67.

Never seen that page, not in the service or assembly manual. Can measure mine as it had original DG4 type mirrors.

Re: Installation / Mounting instructions for 1972 DG4 mirrors

Thanks Richard. Need the dimensions as shown from door leading edge to top and bottom mounting holes.

I think the screws are 1/4-14 SS sheet metal screws to fit 3/16 drilled holes. At least that is what I am seeing in the picture.

I bumped this thread back to the top today. It suggests a couple of different measurements.

Re: Installation / Mounting instructions for 1972 DG4 mirrors

The thread Lockdoc pointed out has good info. Did not visit my truck until today. My truck orginally had the painted DG4 (D29) The holes are small because they were welded up in drivers door and re-drilled before paint. I will be installing the rivit nuts pointed out in the other thread. Holes were still in my old passenger skin I kept. I verified driver and passenger mirror locations are the same.

Re: Installation / Mounting instructions for 1972 DG4 mirrors

Thanks Richard. Danny also sent some pics. I uploaded to the gallery, but can't seem to post pics directly to this thread. So here are the links:

https://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery...hp?photo=46861
https://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery...hp?photo=46862

Based on your pics and comparing to what I can sort of read from the OE instructions, I'd venture this is the original intent:

*Drill (3) 0.19" (3/16) holes thru
*Top hole is 8.25" (8-1/4) back from leading edge of door.
*Bottom forward hole is 5.81" (5-13/16) back from leading edge and down about 6.13" (6-1/8) from body line.
*Fasten to door with (3) #14-14 x 3/4, stainless steel hex washer head or Philips pan head screws.

I plan to seal the screw holes by placing a small blob of butyl rubber on each hole and putting the screw thru the center of it. This is the same butyl "ribbon" used to seal front and rear windshields in 1970's GM cars. Should work fine.

Re: Installation / Mounting instructions for 1972 DG4 mirrors

The OE elbows are chrome plated steel and are usually pitted. LockDoc shared a thread with some possible aftermarket alternatives for both elbows and mirrors:

Elbows, 4.5” even offset
Signal Stat 7933
Truck lite 97869
Napa LIT 97869

Mirrors
Truck lite 97805
Signal Stat 7053
Other part numbers
97842
97681

By the way, all of the hardware can be found at http://www.boltdepot.com, and costs about $25 shipped.
Needed to rebuild one pair of mirrors:

*(8) Nylon Washers - .406 x .94 x .06
*(10) SS Plain Washers - .406 x .88 x .06 (Varies depending on washer thickness and stud length)
*(4) SS Lockwashers - .406 split
*(4) SS Acorn Nuts - 3/8-16 UNC
*(6) SS Washer Head Screws - #14-14 x 3/4 with .515 washer
*(6) SS Internal Tooth Lockwashers - .281 ID (if you want to use under attachment screws, but probably not necessary)
