Testing Radio Out of Truck
I have a Delco AM/FM radio for my 72 Blazer that I picked up years ago. I've never installed it, but now I'm rewiring the truck and was thinking about it. Is there a way to test it before installing it?
Thanks!

Re: Testing Radio Out of Truck
power it up, factory connector helps, connect antenna, and any good 10 ohm speaker should do..
do NOT turn it on without a speaker or regular 4 or 6 ohm modern speaker.. this is where I found out about it and fortunate I didn't kill the factory radio in the '65 suggest you read this about vintage radio and speakers first.. http://www.turnswitch.com/speakers.htm heres' another thread on the subject too, good luck Testing a stock radio?

Thanks. I'll read both of those before I power it up.

Re: Testing Radio Out of Truck
Should you need professional repair, another choice -- this guy did my am/fm in my 70 olds 442. Unless this radio is cosmetically ugly, it is worth keeping and repairing. As Killer Bee says above, play softly if less than a 10 ohm speaker. 2 - 4 ohm speakers in series will allow a test. If someone used a lesser ohm speaker and cranked it up, damage to the germanium convector amp will/may result. If that is the case, it is still worth repairing.

Re: Testing Radio Out of Truck
Thanks. Did he repair it back to stock, or update it with modern electronics? What was the ballpark cost?

Re: Testing Radio Out of Truck
My 70 olds 442 was a stock am/fm stereo of which repaired to stock. It supported front rear left right. He did add a stock fader to it.
I will guess yours is an am/fm mono like a 73 vette. Maybe not. You can email him for his opinion and cost. Or call him but look at web page first, maybe he retired. His price was reasonable to me at less than $150 including shipping to Cincinnati area. It works great. You ship to him, then he gives estimate --- go one way or another from there.

Re: Testing Radio Out of Truck
Thanks. I think I'm going to pull it out this week and take a closer look at it, and I'll go from there. I like the USB my Z28 has, but I'm not willing to cut the dash, and $600 for a modernized stereo is beyond my budget for now.
