4 and 1/2 quart oil change?
Changed the oil in my burban yesterday . All went well till I checked the level it was overfilled. I've always used 5 quarts in 350 ci engines. Sure enough I look at the capacities in the owners manual say 8 pints in pan 2 pints for a pf35 filter. So I pulled the filter and drained it level is about right now.
And when did they start with the pint crap?

Re: 4 and 1/2 quart oil change?
8 pints = 4 quarts. 2 pints = 1 quart. Still 5 quarts total. Some SBC engines specified a 1/2 quart filter for some reason. I had a 68 Impala w/327 that did that. Seemed to be a passenger car thing. Switched to the 1 quart version as the 1 pint version was a PITA to get out. The longer filter was still shorter then the pan so anything likely to smack the filter would be well into smashing the pan first. IIRC - the old Fram numbers were PH13 = 1 qt, PH30 = 1/2 qt. I think the current Fram number is PH5 for the 1qt version.

Re: 4 and 1/2 quart oil change?
I've only known 5 quarts. I'd be more suspicious of the dipstick being correct.
Do you see any scratch lines in it above the factory full mark? If so, probably at or close to the 5 quart point. Ford (yes, I mean blue oval) had a tsb out in the early 90's for late 80's dipsticks that where stamped wrong. Basically said drain, new filter, fill with 5 quarts and take a hacksaw blade to mark the proper full level. |

You can still get PF35L filters- I get mine off Amazon, they're a little pricey but it only gets changed once a year on mine. The PF1218- which replaced the PF35 is not a full quart capacity
