Carter 17058213 Quadrajet Jet Size

Hi guys. My brother is rebuilding my Carb, which is a Carter 17058213 Quadrajet. My understanding the previous truck owner got it an O'Riley's replacement - so it is not original to the truck.

Right now as they have it apart, they believe the Jet(s) are too small and wanting me to confirm what the stock jet size(s). They pulled a .064 jet. I am not finding anything really solid on my google searching and I know more about flying a rocket than Carb Jet sizes. Which is to say, nothing.

Can anyone help me with the original Jet sizes for a Carter 17058213 Quadrajet? This would be a Chevy C10, 350 SBC with a Turbo 350 Trans.

About all I could find close is the below (which is about the size they think my should be).
Found this: Carter had .098 primaries and .073 x .052 rods. This was for a 350 in a '71 Jimmy. It also had "CARTER AFB Competition Series” stamped on this carb.

That carb originally came out on 1978 GMC HD truck and 79 Canada HD truck. Main jet size is 68, main rod 53. Good luck, Lee

Re: Carter 17058213 Quadrajet Jet Size

My truck's primary jetting is.
The primary jets are 64's
The primary rods are B32's
With a generic 350 the A/F ratio is generally 14.5 from most RPMs.

Re: Carter 17058213 Quadrajet Jet Size

Look in Lars chart to find your carb numbers and compare jet/rod sizes.
While your present carb is jetted 63/40 and an original is 73/36 it doesn’t mean the carb you have is leaner. You gotta do the math.
Also don’t confuse carter quadrajets with carter afb’ s. The info you found is for a carter afb. The afb is the older version of the Edelbrock 1406.
Carter owned the quadrajet at one time.

IF, IF you need help, contact CLiff @ Cliffshighperformance.com

THese days Cliff himself, answers the phone (or you get his machine, because he is already on the phone).

Stock jetting and other calibrations are not always the best these days. CLiff has the answers. His parts are ethanol resistant, also. No one else has that!

Nice reference. Wonder if Lars is still active. I met him a times in the 90s in a few Tuning for Beer Tours. I have pictures somewhere of he and I tuning my 75 & my 65 Vette. Pulled the distributors and carbs, went though them.

Re: Carter 17058213 Quadrajet Jet Size

they have the Carb buttoned up and sound like they are closer to the Jet sizes for the '72 specs. The engine has been completely rebuilt, which had not been touched since it rolled off the factory. Though they said the engine had been running way lean before (they think because of that O'Rilley's Carb).

Anyways, they are happy with the jets they put in. The guy helping my brother is one smart cookie. I am sure my engine is going to be happy to be away from all those ford engines! My brother's friend runs/owns http://www.modelaperformance.com/ Which @HO455 if you need a engine for your '29 Ford - that's the place to look first!

Re: Carter 17058213 Quadrajet Jet Size

The Quadrajet is a spread bore carburetor made by Rochester. There was never any affiliation with Carter.

1971 - 1984 Carter did make a Thermoquad (TQ) with a spread bore throttle configuration. It was more of spread bore version of a Carter AVS. The most significant feature of the carb was the plastic (phenolic) center section.

Re: Carter 17058213 Quadrajet Jet Size

APpears I was wrong.
Carter didn’t buy out Rochester.
They just built quadrajets for Rochester carbs.
I think that’s an affiliation.
Close enough for you Richard!

Re: Carter 17058213 Quadrajet Jet Size

Yes, this I knew that the Carters are the same as the Rochester Quadrajets. My understand Carter stepped in (contracted) when Rochester could not keep up or something like that. So they are the same Carb between the two.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quadrajet
Carter-built Quadrajets will have the name "Carter" cast into them, but are functionally identical to the Rochester-built equivalent.
