thermostat ?
whats the normal operating temp. of a standard 350 set up, the reason i ask im trying to figure the benifit of running a lower temp. thermostat in the summer? seems to me that there really is no benifit due to the normal operating temp. of a standard 350 is hotter than 180*? can someone explain the benifit to me or is my reasoning correct?

This is one of those "it's all relative" types of things. A lower temp thermostat may not decrease the running temp anyway. It it all determined by the efficiency of the entire system. If the system is "borderline" capable of keeping in the proper range then there will be little difference. This is because the time the coolant actually spends in the radiator is lower and therefore the coolant doesn't get "cooled" as much as it should.
If your system is more efficient it could very well lower the temperature.......but why would you want to? If your system is working properly it should stay very close to the desired temp, reguardless of outside temp. A cooler thermostat could make it run cooler in this case but you wouldn't want to. If you are not "up to temp" your engine is not running properly and has the potential for problems associated with that. People who are trying to cool an engine that runs too hot in higher ambient temps by lowering the thermostat rating are chasing a symptom not the cause. They really need to look into fans, shrouds, radiator size/tube size/fins, etc. |

low temp thermostats are a hold over from back in the day, like way back in the day.
Longhair has it pegged. You want the engine running at full normal temperature for best efficiency. All the folks putting in lower temperature thermostats to solve overheating problems are missing the boat. If it runs higher than 180 degrees with a 180 thermostat in it, a lower thermostat isn't going to make it run cooler. There's a problem with the cooling system causing it to run hot.

well that make sence to me, i would guess that some are hoping a faulty thermo. is giving them their over heating problem. can anyone give me approx. range of normal operating temps. of these trucks? thanks

180 to 190 degrees. The up north guys like the 190 stats in the winter because it makes the heater work a little better.
