Sensor for Tune Ups?
I was wondering if any of you folks that run carbs still if there is some sorta )@ type sensor that can be used to adjust the carb setting with? The 4bbl (500 CFM) on my 81 and it is running really rich. I have the kit to tear into the Edelbrock, but it would be nice to know with some sorta gauge to see what is coming out the pipe without having to run it a while, check the plugs and all. I have not down a carb reject/rerod (whatever you call it on an Edelbrock) in 30 years.

Running real rich on an eddy is usually too much fuel pressure.
Have you got a regulator set to 5 psi. |

Its the factory fuel pump on my 250, which isn't real hig output..

Have you performed the basics? Timing and set idle/mixture with vacuum gauge?
Also, checked to ensure choke is opening all the way after warm up?

The normal tuning gauge is an Air Fuel gauge but they require an O2 sensor be mounted in the exhaust system very close to the transition from exhaust manifold to pipe.
Make sure the choke is adjusted properly. As mentioned check for fuel pressure. If you take the carb apart, check for proper float height. The nice thing about the eddy carb is you can change the rods and power piston springs via the little access caps on top. If the carb has been in service for a while, maybe all you need to do is pull the caps and give the pistons and cylinders a good soaking in carb cleaner. They can get gummed up and sticky after a few years. Would also let you check what rods and springs are installed. Depending on what carb you have, possible it was sold as a "Performance" carb and those are usually rich for a daily driver. The manuals came with a calibration chart for making adjustments. You might check which rods you have and order a set that is a bit leaner on the chart. Same for the springs. |

Everything is new. Timing and fuel pressure is good. Choke appears to open all the way. I just can't go lean enough on the carb with the out of the box jetting. I was just curious if there was anything out there like you see the EFI guys use to monitor fuel mixture. I'll probably be getting into opening up carb and rejetting it. This is all on the new tweaked some 250 I put into the truck. It is old style heard, cam, 4bbl Offenhauser intake, the new Edelbrock 500 carb and headers.

I installed a AEM wideband O2 sensor in my truck and is the best thing I ever did as far as tuning. It helped me pass emissions here in CO. The gauge does become a litte addictive watching it as you driving to see what air/fuel ratio is.
