Steering Column Shift Detent Plate - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

The detent plate (or whatever it is called) on my automatic steering column has a groove worn in it so that the shifter lever does not have to be pulled back to shift out of park. Does anyone make a replacement detent plate?

PJ I don't believe that piece is reproduced. At least I haven't seen one. You will likely have to remove your column and disassemble it and have someone weld yours up and grind it back to form. Or find a better used one to replace yours. Your column needs to be disassembled and cleaned good anyway. The shift tube gets grungy and stiff inside the column and cleaning and lubing goes a long way to returning it to original operation.
If this truck is your daily transportation you may elect to find another complete column to clean up and swap with yours to limit your down time.

Also there are several forum members here who refurbish steering columns that might sell you a good part or parts.

Man that's a lot of shifting! Is this in an old UPS truck? As previously said it is time to go through that column.
I'm sure the piece that made the groove in the detent needs some attention too.

This truck had a powerglide in it originally. I'm wondering if a previous owner liked to shift it manually all the time. Good point about the other piece. I will check it out.

I ended up filling in the groove in the detent plate with my cheap little flux MIG welder. It's not perfect, but it is functional.
